Has anyone actually looked at and compared these two Book of Centuries books? They both look very nice.
My Book of Centuries (It is possible to see a sample of this one.)
History Through the Ages Record of Time (This one has a beautiful cover but I can't see how it looks inside.
The first is less expensive, but I want this to be a very special and memorable part of my kids' education, so I don't mind paying more if the second one is worth it.
Please help me decide!

We purchased the cd-roms of the homeschool in the woods one and I am VERY pleased. I think there are some samples there somewhere.

Wish I had an opinion. I decided I would give each of my kids their own just around 4th grade. They get a hardcover bound blank book and I fill in the dates at the top to look more like what Laurie B. talks about here and here. I bought mine at Michael's but it looks very much like the one she sells at her site. My oldest has been using hers for a few years now and it is holding up extremely well. I buying my second one for my upcoming 4th grader, she'll start hers in the fall.

Just some thoughts to consider:
SCM's My Book of Centuries
+includes several different types of pages to record things on: century at a glance, narrative page, noteworthy page, artifacts page.
+can purchase in ebook form and bind your own (note the page layout, though; it is designed in landscape so writing entries may be more difficult if instead you bind in a three-rign binder, BUT you could always take out the pages out to work on them, if in a three-ring binder or ProClick)
-only customizable in ebook format (if you might want to add pages to it)
History Through The Ages
+very handsome
+can add pages (although unless you purchase the CD-ROM and similar paper, it would not look as nice---if that's important to you)
+available on CD-ROM so you can add pages or customize or use for multiple children
-more costly
-only timeline pages and maps in back
Laurie Bestvater's Book of Centuries
+very handsome
-uses BCE/CE rather than BC/AD dating (perhaps you agree with Laurie and this is a plus, not a minus?)
-pricey
-cannot add pages or customize
-no electronic form so you would purchase for each child in full
And, finally, the Homemade alternative;
+customize all you want (Homeschool Through the Ages has a beautiful set of Old Word maps that would be so lovely in a BOC!)
+add pages if you bind in binder or with ProClick (this is a serious consideration here for a perfectionist child who would be unable to make an attempt if the pages were fixed and unalterable.)
-more work to initially set up but once done you just print out and assemble for each successive child

Becky,
I don't have a lot of time right now, but I use both!
We have used the Homeschool In the Woods book for several years; two of my kids are working in a BOC. There are SEVERAL threads here, and I know I've put some pics up on some of them (I'm just sorry I don't have time to go find them for you right now.)
A couple of months ago, I bought the ebook version of the SCM book, and printed the century at a glance pages and the noteworthy pages, printing front to back on ivory cardstock to match the ivory of the other BOC. I punched them and put them in the kids BOC, one for each century.
I really like the SCM century at a glance pages, and I like that in purchasing the ebook version I can print these for each of my children and add them to their BOC. I like the Homeschool in the Woods book for durability, layout, and the ability to add to it.
I'll try to come back later and put some pics up here.
I really like Karen's points of each option above!!

Just came across another resource if you are interested in making your own BOC: GuestHollow.com has a free, downloadable timeline/BOC.
Also available at same site, is a template for making timeline figures (if you are visual rather than a list-maker).

Jenny,
Can you tell me the brand of book you found at Michael's that you've been using as your BOC? And does it have one page lined with the other blank? Or is it just a blank book?
Thanks!

Sure...We bought a Strathmore hardbound sketch book with acid free pages. Both sides are blank. I went in and labeled the right side with the century date and left the other side alone. It is still in great condition!

Thanks, Jenny! I was hoping you'd tell me that the left facing page was lined with the right facing page blank for drawings. Oh well! Still appreciate your thoughts on it very much!!

Jen - the only book I have managed to find with lines and blank pages is the Cachet Fusion Sketchbook/Journal/Portfolio I have been looking at them for a while and am saving up to hopefully get some for the next school year. Mister Art sells them too.

How kind!! thank you!
And truly, I am so grateful! Those were the exact books I was looking for and hadn't found yet! I got the 9 x 12 Fusion sketch books from Mister Art because they were a little less expensive there.
(And then I was able to find our new nature sketch notebooks in the 8"x 8" size I had been hunting for...also at Mister Art...and re-stock our art supplies for next term's Artistic Pursuits lessons! So, you helped me wipe SEVERAL things off my to-do list all at once!! ....So, I'm toasting you with my cup of cafe' au lait while I watch the baby scoot across the floor!!)

Hello!
Can you please tell me if the Fusion sketch books you're talking about would be suitable for watercolor painting as well?
Thank you!

Hi Kelly!
I don't have the Fusion in my hands yet, but in looking at the weight of the paper, I think it might be possible in this book.
The weight is 120 gsm. (conversion --> gsm / 1.5 = lbs.) So, the Fusion sketchbook paper is 80 lb paper, which is pretty substantial weight paper, really. That's usually enough for a light dry brush watercolor for us, but not a full wet watercolor painting if that's what you're looking to do.
For more than you EVER wanted to know about paper and weight...
It isn't quite as heavy as standard watercolor paper, which can vary from 90 lb - 300 lb paper, but the watercolor weight paper we regularly use (Canson) is 120 lb and has no bend in it at all. Standard copy paper is about 24 lb. So, that might give you a little bit of a frame of reference. Maybe you knew that, though...if so...I'm afraid that would make you as much a paper geek as me!

I wanted to remind everyone about Michele's "Mapping History" as her store is now partially back up for the spring. I can't link directly to it, but we have it and it is lovely. I was excited to start with my fourth grader this year, but he is a youngish fourth grader( will be 10 this summer) and it hasn't seemed he is quite ready yet, though we may start later this spring and summer as we year round at least this year. The paper is lovely and the layout is as Laurie described in her article and in The Living Page. Left side is blank, right side is lined. The pages are not dated, that is left to the student. The pages are an ivory color and a nice weight, landscape with binding on left side, and a beautiful cover protected by a clear cover, as well as a plastic back cover. Spiral bound so it lays flat. I am looking forward to watching my son use it and I think it will make a nice keepsake. I'd love to get my own as well at some point as I learn with the children!
You can see some images on the Mater Amabilis Facebook page if you are a member, and search "mapping history."
