Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Lovely picture book biography of our first president. It is a pictoral treasure to add to any George Washington study for young students. Gives brief overview of his life. Each page covers a period of his life and includes in addition to the main text, a handwritten rule from the "Rules of Civility." As a young schoolboy he copied the "Rules of Civility." These are rules George Washington compiled to guide his life. They no doubt influenced his character and leadership ability.

Quote:
These maxims originated in the late sixteenth century in France and were popularly circulated during Washington's time. Washington wrote out a copy of the 110 Rules in his school book when he was about sixteen-years old.

The illustrations are remarkable. My son was just looking over my shoulder (we haven't read it together yet) and said, "Those pictures look real. They are amazing."

This exercise, now regarded as a formative influence in the development of his character, included guidelines for behavior in pleasant company, appropriate actions in formal situations, and general courtesies.
