Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We just finished listening to the first Penderwicks book, and we all loved it. Instead of moving right on to the next Penderwick book, I thought we would listen to something different....

I am sure there are a lot of favorites out there, so I thought I would ask for suggestions.
Thanks

We're on a big audio book kick this summer.

Gone-Away Lake and Return to Gone Away by Elizabeth Enright. We're planning to go forward with the Melendy Quartet series next.

Loved the Little House books.

Just finished The Railway Children by E. Nesbit. LOVED IT! We'll listen to more of hers for sure!

Do you buy these? If so, are they CDs, MP3s...?

For years, our all time favorite was the Chronicles of Narnia (they are actually cassette tapes!). Now the favorite is Hatchet.
We have both cd's and MP3s. Our problem is that if we take a camping trip we have to take the old van since it's the bigger one. We can't listen to the downloaded books very well in that one, so we need them on cd.

For us, we're still using cds. I don't have an mp3 player, and although I know we can burn them to cd, we're doing it the old-fashioned way. Most of the time I use our library cds, but for Elizabeth Enright's books I made an exception since our library had only one of hers. I found a few used versions that didn't break the bank.

We also use many cd's from the library. Recently, though, I joined Audible, an audio book resource. I purchase books and download them to the computer and iPad...it's great for the books the library doesn't have available.

We use mp3's.. and plug into a transmitter so that it plays through the van's speaker system.

We may have the same Narnia cassette tapes. The ones we have are acted out with different actors playing different characters, but they contain the full novel. We have listened to them over and over. Excellent!

I have always loved "The Wheel on the School" as an audiobook because the lady who reads it does such a wonderful job with the names. I love the story and could listen to it over and over, and having someone correctly pronounce the names--bliss!

If I remember correctly, the first Hank the Cowdog book was also good as an audiobook.

Oh! And how could I forget our favorite drive-to-the-beach-CD? Swallows and Amazons!! Complete and unabridged. Lovely!

We enjoyed Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle this summer...and many of the sequels.

The Whipping Boy was another one we really enjoyed.

We loved the Penderwicks first book! Another favorite is Peter Pan ready by Jim Dale. We also enjoy any of the Focus on the Family Radio Theater productions (not technically audiobooks, but similar): we have Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, and another that I can't remember.   My kids love the Mysterious Benedict Society but I can't recommend it only because I haven't listened to it!

I've decided that The Enchanted Castle/E. Nesbit is the book to download next. I used my Audible credit to put it on an Ipad and then hook that up to little speakers my daughter has so we can all listen together.

Many of your book choices have been used as read alouds around here....but with so many years of read alouds, I realize many of the younger kids don't remember the books (or they remember parts here and there).

I am definitely bookmarking this thread to come back to again and again. We especially love the peace and tranquility of "listening" time and it is one of our favorite times of day....I just hope I haven't over planned this year and we don't have enough time to do what we enjoy most!

Sounds wonderful! The Railway Children is the first E. Nesbit book I've read/listened to, and I'm dismayed that I missed her when I was growing up. We're trying to remedy that now!

My big kids still mention how they loved The Railway Children....it is definitely on the "to listen to list"

Trumpet and the Swan
Swiss Family Robinson
Little House on the Prairie
Freddy the Pig (and several sequels)

Our children also love listening to Glory Stories - stories about saints - though not technically books.

We actually ran out of gas on a trip once since we got so enthralled with Redwall on Audio! So fun to hear Bryan Jaques do the voices. Penderwicks are very fun as well.

The Soup series by Robert Newton Peck is hilarious.
Books by Bruce Coville are great.

Laura, I am ashamed to admit that I have never read the series, what age would be appropriate for the read aloud of Redwall?
TIA!
