There- I said it. For the past three years I have relied heavily on calendars, coffee table books and books from the library for our Charlotte Mason style art study.
But now the going is getting tougher...
The Impressionists are hogging the calendar market  ,
and the library books, I am finding, might have two or three pictures on a two page spread, which I think is distracting when you are trying to focus in on one. And post cards are just too small... you can't study the details well at all.
I find I am not able to get multiple large prints from a single lesser known artist to use in our 6 week block studies.
I am sure others must be facing the same dilemma. How are you handling this? Are you studying artists as a group (ex. dutch masters)? Are you just going back to revisit the better known artists over and over? Nothing wrong with that- a different ages and times we pick up different things.
Still, I do feel a bit frustrated.... 
ETA: last year I tried printing my own copies of pictures from the Ambleside on line files... some were fine, some were just hideous with the colors way off. I'm sure the artists would all cry if they saw them.

Well, Melinda, don't you think this is the best place to ask for resources? 
I have noticed the same thing about impressionism being the large market share.
So, I'd be happy to help in any way...just put out a few names of your artists and artwork you are looking for.

was just thinking of posting something related to this. When I was ordering our photo Christmas cards from Costco a few weeks ago, I found that they have an art and image gallery. You can order poster sized prints for very little (well, I guess compared to other places). You might find some artists there you like.

I have a few ideas:
1) Often libraries or thrift stores will sell the "coffee table" type books that have fabulous prints in them for just a few dollars. You can remove the prints from the books if there are some you want and some that you'd rather not have. I like to laminate them if I remove them so they don't get all wrinkled up.
2) Online image searches can yield a lot of good images, but you need to sort through them and just select the ones you want, since they can also pop up with morally unacceptable images.
3) Virtual museums can be sources. Here is a link to The National Gallery, for example. Google "virtual museum tours" for other museums.
4) Another online idea is to google "image artist's name". Here, for example, are a series of pictures done by Fra Angelico. When we studied Fra Angelico, I wrote a booklet, interspersing text with pictures I had found online. So we had a biography and some pictures to study. I never posted a link to it because the whole area of copyright on online images is confusing for me, but we just used it for our own studies.
Ordering prints of adequate size can get very expensive very fast, so I rarely do it unless I really want the print for my home. One resource I found (but haven't ordered from yet) is Art Print Resources. They sell to schools and have large prints at very reasonable prices. The quality looks acceptable as well, but again I haven't ordered from them yet.

Melinda, I found this Norman Rockwell used coffee table book as an example for you. It's in only acceptable condition, but 80% of the plates of OK and it's only about $20.00. When you start to buy individual prints, you can easy exceed that with one or two prints. Even better is to find books like this at garage sales, etc where they cost usually less than $5.

I've had the same problem. What we're doing is borrowing the largest "plate" type books we can from the library and then supplementing with online pictures. If a page in a book has more than one print, I hold white paper over the other print. For online pictures I copy and paste the picture into a Word doc so that I can zoom in. Of course the color isn't always perfect and I'd rather hold a book, but it's a way to see lots of examples of an artist's work.

Wow- that is just what I was looking for. That ought to keep me going for awhile. And less than $2 for an 8x12-
I wonder if other sites offer something like that as well?
Tonight I am going to spend some time at the Costco Site and really look into this- thanks so much, Stef!! It will be atreat for me to look forward to tonight.

I was looking for prints by Doris Lee (I just love her picture called "The Busy Ktichen". ) Then also Winslow Homer- library books were OK, but I definitely had to use Janette's white paper trick. Rosseau was another one- got a library book for him, but I was hoping for more of his jungle scenes than the book offered.
I have requested the big library books and then have often found that the pages are really cluttered up with text, sketches and multiple pictures. I'm somewhat leery of buying a used book on line for the same reason- just not sure what I will get. For artists like DaVinci, I'm finding the same thing- only with him I often get a tiny fragment of a work blown up...

Oh, my!
The possibilities of the Costco site are making my head spin. I can pick prints to do a Marian art study. Or national parks. Or an individual artist.
Or Christmas scenes. Or storybook scenes. Six prints for under $10!
Guess I'd better restrain myself until I see what kind of quality the prints are though, right?

If it's the same quality as their other prints, I'd say
Two years ago a friend did our dd's senior pics. He gave me the raw files on disc, and I had them printed at Adorama (based on some pro photographer friends' recommendations). Then the friend who photographed her had a few prints done at Costco and gave them to us as a gift. There was a difference, yes, but the Costco prints were professional enough that I was really impressed. I haven't ordered at Adorama since.
I'm planning to order some prints next month. I was thinking either Cassatt or Marian study too. So excited!

I had been meaning to look at the Costco site to see what they had and this thread reminded me. I was very impressed too! They have enough prints to do a study on Audubon, who sparked our interest while reading Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans. Can't wait to order them
