I had to vote for traditional summer break, since all formal studies are usually finished. However, there's always learning going on in our household, which is often reflected by our library choices during the summertime....the librarians must get quite a kick out of all the non-fiction, historical books and materials we check out! They probably wonder, "What kids in their right minds actually CHOOSE to read such things when they aren't required to?"

I picked other. 
We take a very short break - about 3 - 4 weeks. During this time, the kids read, are immersed in concentrated physical activities outside the home, and enjoy special field trips. This year, we're hitting some exciting Botanical Gardens before the weather is excruciatingly hot!
We quiz math facts, read from Nature Friend magazine, do informal nature studies/observations (that often morph into bigger projects - right now we're enjoying a whole study on ducks since we have 3 wild Mallard ducks that visit us 3 times/day), work on domestic skills/habits, the children do some reading, and we still read aloud as a family. It's sort of informal-ish, I guess.
So, it's not really a traditional summer break, since I consider us to be year-rounders, and we're starting up our new year when most are just starting to break. And, though it's mostly informal, it's still rich enough that once I typed it all out I was impressed! 
One of our favorite things to do during our short break this late spring/early summer have been to have afternoon popcorn movies with some great oldies! And of course, we've been enjoying the I Love Lucy-a-thons...probably a little too much!

I am SO. READY. for a break
I want to go through our school room and really weed things out. I want to give it a fresh look... maybe rearrange some furniture. Clean all the windows. Try to get the dried playdough off the rug once and for all.
Also, I want to concentrate on doing some fun things with the kids, like give needlework a serious try and do some more of the fun crafts from the Story of the World Activity book. I plan do a mini-unit on manners (I just got my copy of Everyday Graces) and give one or two of the Magic School bus science kits a whirl.
Reading Jen's post reminds me that I really, really need to go to year round schooling. The summer months here are brutal. We'd be much better off having a month off in October than July.

We take the summer off from formal stuff.
But like was mentioned above.. we're always learning. We have a garden going and we do camping and outdoor things, swim team takes up about 8 weeks.. summer is great for astronomy and with a dh botanist you can't be outside without him explaining plants and stuff

what with a challenging pregnancy and then a newborn with health issues, we've taken off so much time this winter and spring that we're just NOW getting our schooling started up again!  so it's nice to hear we won't be alone in this summer session. (especially since the neighborhood kids will expect us to be available all day starting next week ...)

My kids and I appreciate the summer "down time" (what's left of it after summer jobs, dance classes, etc.) so much. This year we especially need it because of our renovation project.
I do work in some "field trips" - I write about them for my job, and drag the family along - and we go visiting whenever we can. I think my children know as much Indiana state history as any Indiana schoolchild would!

We take a break from school work over the summer. We need the time to do other things like camps and trips. Sam is going on a Boy Scout high adventure hiking trip this summer,and Jenny will hopefully be attending arts camp (she's currently on the wait list).Plus, our college-age kids come home so we spend time with them. I find it good for our mental health to take the time off and relax, though reading is something we always do. In fact it usually kicks into high gear in the summer as we have the time to relax and really fall into a great book. Nothing like having nothing to do all day but devour a good book.

One of the hardest "pills" to swallow when I graduated from undergrad and started working full-time was the idea that I would ONLY get a week or two during the summer. What a RUDE awakening ...
I think it does a disservice to the kids to stop learning during the summer, after I've spent all year telling them that we're always learning .... 
So, we do school, but minimal with lots of activities and field trips and natural science with Dad (who has summers off as a "real school" teacher )
But that's just me .....

Um, I picked "other", too, because in different summers we do "all of the above", just at different times.
We take off about a month or so, but that's the longest time we ever take off because the kids start getting bored.
During the time we're technically "off", the kids are doing informal stuff of their own choosing, but I am often pressed into duty to help with projects, find books, etc. The kids have asked me to put together a bin of "summer" books for them this year. I'm often still reading aloud through the break, but I usually look for books that are a little more relaxed.
After a 4 week (6 weeks at the longest) break, we add in at least math... and I usually start to read aloud again for history (usually) and do catechism again. But as long as the weather is good... we are outside. And we sometimes take a break in September, because with allergies and our annual Sept. colds, we don't get much done anyway.
We also usually take lots of field trips in the summer time. (Not this summer, though, with a new baby.)
So, uh, summer is *different* for us, but I'm not sure it fits into any of the 3 categories exactly.

I picked "other". I have a much lighter "schedule". We're not doing work everyday but I do continue through with their learning as the opportunity allows. Math I try to keep going somewhat because it is a struggling point for some. Long car trips are perfect for History or Music Composers etc. (Think books on CD)
I don't usually "break open" the new books for August / September though ;-)

We do our most formal work during the summer. Baseball playing slows down from spring...and it is soooooooooooo hot. We are inside more so we watch more movies, read more books...love it!

I've set up a week day schedule for this summer ~ Child's Treasury of Daily Prayers (LOVE this), read aloud (finishing The Long Winter), Apologia Botany, and Catholic Lapbooks - dd11 is doing Mass and ds8 is doing Holy Eucharist. Definitely more planned than not.

Does anyone school during the summer and take their break during the fall/spring?
I'm considering it since it gets so hot here {South Texas} during the summer that we really can't do much outside anyway. On the other hand, all the local homeschool events seem to be tied to the traditional school year.

We school year round and do relaxed learning during the summer but this year we need to be a bit more formal. Due to some life bumps this past year, we didn't get much learning done. This summer we will be doing the basics (reading, math and writing.) This was going to be it for us but I just bought Further Up and Further In today, so I think we might start that in the summer, add some fun to our days.

That's what we're doing. We also live in an area that gets too hot to go out much during the day.
The other reason is that I will be working about 30 hours a week during the school year but only 15-20 hours during the summer so we're going to start counting hours in July while I have a bit more time.
If we're ahead on hours by December, we will probably take much of that month off since it is concert season for me and just focus on Christmas, and probably another extended break in April since I'll have more concert stuff going on.

YEP!
It is too hot for us to do much else in the summer so we school all summer (with three weeks off in August to prep for next year). We take our largest break in the winter, from Thanksgiving week through the octave of Christmas. Usually we end up starting again in mid Jan. We love it this way and get so much done in the summer when all the outside activities break:)
