I'm trying to encourage my kids to do a nicer job on their copy work. My ds, who struggles with writing actually is very good at taking his time and doing his best work. My dd who is 11 just rushes through it though. Then there is the 6yo who is just learning to form the letters correctly, but I want him to start out with the right attitude.
I would like to get some notebooks (or maybe binders) for next year and really stress the importance of the kids doing their best work, always. I read somewhere that there is an old name for copywork books, something that to me described something beautiful, just by the name (if that makes any sense ). But I can't think of what it is! Can anyone help me out with that?

Hmmmm, that is a good question, Becky! Was there something in Little House books that mentions it?
You're right, if we elevate the "notebook" to something more elegant and special, there will be more honor given to it. Right now that notebook can be a downgrading word.

No, I don't think it was the Little House books. I actually think it was something I read here, maybe a year or so ago. Trouble is, I can't think of the word to do a search!
I'm going to try a search for copywork notebook and see what I get, although I'm guessing I'll have lots to read through to find it.

Wasn't it something like Gathering Journal? I remeber the conversation, but am drawing a blank on the name. Or Keeping Journal?

Hmm, those don't sound like what I was thinking of Paula. My search isn't helping much either.
Maybe I should make up a name!

Becky, you have my curiosity peaked. If you figure out what it is, please come back and post it!

I'm still searching Lindsay!
I did find reference to a "common place notebook" here. Maybe that is what I was thinking of. I'm still not convinced though. I really need to write these things down!

Okay, now that I found this thread I think commonplace book is the word I was thinking of. It didn't ring a bell with me at first because it sounds so, well, "common" . The way the ladies describe it in the link above is quite lovely though.

Yes, it is somewhat disappointing to imagine you are looking for an EXTRAORDINARY word to describe something only to find the word contains the word "common."
I also liked Paula's words "Gathering Place"
You could also try to think of a name as if you were doing something like naming a blog. My own "commonplace book" might be titled on the front "My Symphony" or for a child, the name of Alice Cantrell's blog "a number of things" seems appropriate or "Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings" or just "Cabbages and Kings"
Anyway, that might be a fun way to make your "commonplace book" feel less common. And the title could change when it is full!

Well, in monasteries and large communities, this term "common room" is used all the time. But it isn't about "common", I think it's using use of the word for "community", or public (as in "common prayer").
So in that sense, it's a book that is used across the subjects, in all areas and all interests. Not as in everyday, nothing special, but universally applicable to all areas.

You are so sensible Jenn.
This is purely about the emotional response to the word.

Lindsay, that's a great idea! I love the idea of naming these something creative. I'll have to think on that a while. And Jennifer, the way you describe the word "commonplace" makes me think of my dad's school notebook which is so special to me as a memory of him. Actually, this is the type of notebook I am making with my K'er this year. Sort of a hodge-podge of things, not in any order by subject, but in order chronologically. I actually found an old photo album, that has cardstock pages instead of the sleeves for pictures. My ds really loves his notebook!

I know, I had the same reaction. I was so looking forward to a beckoning name.
I was just taking it the next step to see how it could be more beautiful than the coarse/common/general way I was seeing it. Plus, I was also trying to see how you naming it could be connected with the community/communual/universal idea.
