It may be fun and helpful to share links to fruitful discussion starters from online resources that have worked for our families, in the hopes that others might enjoy them as well. Share a brief introduction to the topic, about how long it takes to read and discuss, and why you and your teens found it helpful, interesting, fun, or worth discussing. Of course, let's all respect and protect the privacy of our teens .
Here's one we discussed this morning, LeBron James and Structured Writing. Connects our love of sports with a desire to be disciplined while writing. Read Maya Wilson's comment in the comment section for counter-argument. Talk about... Catholic faith regarding freedom within structure...conservative and liberal philosophy...male and female voice...
Time: < 10 minutes

I'm copying Leonie's quote from another post here...great discussion starter tips! (Emphasis is mine.)
Leonie wrote:
Movies and books have been great discussion starters for us..for example, we watched Lost In Austen and then, after the first episode, I asked "What book would you choose to live in?".
Wow, the discussion was great..lots of insight into how we all think..some the same and some differently.
Or, one night, after mass and while hanging out after dinner, I asked what name would you choose if you were going to be a religious ( we have Franciscan friars in our parish). Another great conversation followed..and yet, these both weren't planned discussions, they happened because I shared my thinking, I was available and we had some down time together ( dinner or movie). |

I don't have teens, yet (or should I say again!), so I haven't been following the discussion. I clicked on the link and can't wait to talk about it with my dh later!

Glad you all liked it, Sports Pal Paula .
This morning, we discussed this article, Why I Don't Attend the March for Life. I read it myself this morning and opened a discussion at breakfast with, "I read an interesting article this morning called, Why I don't Attend the March for Life. The author is Catholic and pro-life. Are there good reasons to not go to the March for Life?" Connects with the local happening of teen friends who are going to the March, political action, intended and unintented consequences, personal gain, feelings connected to "experiences", Supreme Court authority, making law/ammendments, different perspectives, and more.
Time: < 10 minutes + additional time for teen to read article/comments, if they choose, after discussion.
Love,

Our love for Tim Tebow goes way back. Following his college career has been a great privilege! Watching his credibility grow and seeing him win over even hardened sports pundits has been simply amazing.
We've been discussing the Tebow ad and all the politics involved since news of it first broke. Today, I'll show my teens this opportunity:
More than 50,000 show support for Tebow pro-life Super Bowl ad
Block Hard for Tim Tebow
Time: 10 minutes + time to compose and send message
Love,

Sports fans, here's Grant Hill's Response to Jalen Rose.
It is an example of persuasive writing and covers tricky topics of race, excellence, education, and more. (Go Suns!)

What a great idea! Don't know how I missed this thread. I find emailing my teens a great way to get them to read and then discuss.
Just sent a link to my teens this week from the Aust. Cath. Weekly on mortal sin, following our Faith lesson. Teens wanting to know just 'which ones' are mortal. Some interesting ones we hadn't thought about there.

Great thread, Angie! I had this in my favorites, but I'm grateful for the bump, and delighted to add our latest discussion here.
We've been discussing a local NASA scientist that claims to have found bacteria (evidence of life) inside a meteorite. Interesting findings and interesting discussion! We're not the only ones discussing this!

Erin, neat article:
Quote:
A good rule of thumb is that the taking of the equivalent of a day’s wages from someone is a mortal sin.
Included in this area are fraud, the failure to honour contracts, tax evasion, corruption, habitual laziness in the workplace, etc. |
|
|
I have never heard this concept put in such objective terms. Love it!
Thanks for joining in, ladies. I'll check out your articles, Jen .
Love,

These were the sins that jumped out at our teens. Lots of discussions here
I'll have to pass on Jen's link, my dh and teens enjoy those sorts of discussions.

We're still discussing our man Tim Tebow! Last night, after he helped Denver to beat the Chargers, I saw one of the best post-game discussions. There was one pundit who earlier in the season was sooooooooooo negative about Tebow that I left the room rather than hear his nay-saying. Last night, he described Tebow as "magic" and that he can't take away from his his ability to improve a team, to help others to trust in his leadership! SWEET! So we discussed how perhaps the correct word is "mystery" and "grace" when it comes to Tebow. What do you sports fans think?
Love,

Tebow! Even though we've lived here for over 20 years we have never gotten on the Broncos fan wagon - until this past year, It has been amazing. Tebow - what a great guy. Love how he is handling the whole thing, with grace - that would be exactly how I describe it. He doesn't bite at the negativity or the attacks against him. He just goes on working hard and being who is he is - genuine. It is bizarre how much some people dislike him and want him to fail. Though I am glad to see some people coming around - who recognize something unique and good about him.

We are prejudiced Tebow fans since he is from our city, Jax,Fl, and especially since he was homeschooled. He truly is a special young man that is a terrific sports hero for modern kids to emulate.

Having gone to a huge football university myself (UCLA), I am always thankful to learn about a football player who is willing to stand up for his faith and live the life he feels God calls him to. Tim Tebow is one of those players. He is a class act and I am glad to know that some of his former detractors are beginning to recognize this. We need more positive role models in the sports world.
Yankees baseball player Mark Texiera's parents are members of my parish, and a couple of weeks ago they gave a talk on raising faith-filled sports professionals. I so wish I could have attended (one of my many "I can't...I have dance" moments), because I think this message goes way beyond professional sports. It applies to professional everything.

My dh asked me to read this fox sports article on T. Tebow. If you haven't seen it, you might enjoy it. The writer gives his parents much credit for raising a great person/player.
