Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I had a few minutes, I hope no one minds me jumping in to do this. Please volunteer if you'd like to take over!

I chose Edouard Manet for January, as he has a birthday -- January 23, 1832 to be exact. Manet was a French Realist/Impressionist painter, printmaker, and draftsman.

Here are a few links about Manet:

Manet - from Artchive

Manet - from Artcyclopedia scroll down to "search inside" books on Manet from Amazon

Manet: Public Places, Private Dreams

I tried to select 4 very different paintings. Here is the first, I think I'll do 4 different posts.

The Reading 1869. Oil on canvas. Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France

And a link to this painting online:

The Beach at Boulogne-sur-Mer 1869. Oil on canvas. The collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Melon, Upperville, Virginia, USA

... let the art study begin! I'm going to print these out and put them up in our kitchen. If we come up with anything deep I'll let you know.

Great choices, Amy. It was interesting that you mentioned choosing what you felt to be 4 very different pieces. While the subject matter and view does make them different my first impression (hee hee - impressionist art) was that three of them struck me as very similar to each other. It is the color scheme in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th - a single color dominates each of those pictures (white in one, blue/green in another, and yellow in last) and I think that is really cool. It really draws you into the picture.

Here is the link I used to select the pictures -

Olga's Gallery - Manet

You can see that it's hard to find pictures that don't do that! They seem to have one predominant color scheme or a balance of two opposing colors. The few that seem to be different I guess I either didn't like the subject matter or thought they were not as interesting! It was hard to narrow it down to 4!

I'm glad I'm doing this - it forces me to learn more.

A question: Is this for us to do a picture study and post our comments? or is it to study with our kids? or both?
If we discuss it on the board, does anybody has a guide to picture study? or some points to look for on a picture... you know, something that can guide the discussion.

Thank you, Amy.

I have The Escape of Rocherfort as the wallpaper on my computer right now - my computer sits in the dining room and is thus quite visible!

How about posting our comments, and our kids' comments? We could discuss the paintings, like a class.

Still Life in Melted Crayon
This is a Manet art activity from the Discovering Great Artists book by Mary Ann Kohl

"Young artists explore Manet's Impressionist style with a melted-crayon activity that resembles the dabbled look of his paintings. And like Manet, the young artist paints a still-life indoors in the art studio instead of outside."

Basic steps of project:
-Arrange a still-life on table
-Peel broken crayons and put in cups of an old muffin tin, separated by color.
-Melt in oven and then place pan on warming tray or electric skillet to keep colors melted.
-Dip an old paintbrush or cotton swab in the melted crayon and practice dabbing on drawing paper. Use separate "dabber" for each color. Let the dabs join together in the style of the Impressionists.
-After practice, look at the still-life arrangement and dab melted crayon in the design of the still-life. Try to pick up the colors and shapes.

Donna,
I've looked through the book at a homeschooling convention & was very impressed! It is on my wish list to buy. I've checked our library and I would have to ILL it for a fee. I wouldn't know when it would come in & from past ILL experience, would have to return it before we were finished with it!

Too much information, I know. Just wanted to let you know how much I liked it!
