I saw in the second grade plans post that many of you are planning a Core 5/Geography/Global studies kind of year next year. So are we!
I didn't want to hijack the other thread any more than it is so I'm here asking if anyone would like to share their plans.
All year I've been collecting Core 5 books from Paperbackswap and have a decent pile growing! I have Galloping the Globe on a shelf somewhere that I need to take out and peruse soon. And I am SO exited to hear that Serendipity will be travelling right along with us!
Wondering if anyone has a link that shows a list of chapter books arranged by country/setting and level so I can add a few outside of the Core 5/Eastern Hemisphere area.
Tying in science to this will be fun - I wonder what we can do outside the "animals of the world" idea - we did that for a time and my kids tired of it Although that was a different set of kids who tire easily

Amy
I am going to be doing Around the World in One School Yearwith all my children from toddler to Grade 8. It is a World Geography and Cultures study but will also include habitats and ecosystems from around the world and world music and art. I hope to have picture books and chapter books for most of the countries/areas of the World. We will have some missionary studies - but include more Saints from the different countries.
I am still planning and making lists - this has come secondary to my nesting lists I think I have accepted that I will not have next year planned before baby arrives and possibly will not have this year finished So much for using an off the shelf curriculum huh - which had been my thought in the winter when I was so overwhelmed with illness!!
I will be adding to my blog with lists etc whenever I can. If you need something right away I can try and type up some of my paper notes for you.

I want to do some basic geography on the continents and an animal habitat study with my 5 year old son next year. It's the perfect combination for my animal and map loving son!
I was looking at WP's Animal Worlds and GTG for ideas.
Mater Ambalis also has a list of picture books organized by country for the Prep (Kindergaren) year (look under geography):

My oldest is doing core 5 independently. I'm most interested in what saints others are including in these non western locations, if anyone is willing share? I figured we'd do Francis Xavier, and Mo. Theresa is already a part of the study, but I'm still looking for more...

In core 5 Matteo Ricci is covered by a book called Mission to Cathay. Africa has a lot of available saint material. Father Damien is good for the pacific Islands. The empty areas are Korea, Australia, Mongolia and I haven't solidified my plans for the Middle East yet, so Im not sure what would be good there.

My dh's uncle was a Franciscan Priest and missionary to Africa when he was alive, so I was also thinking of adding in modern day Catholic Missionary stories if I can find anything out from his order or his sisters. I'll let you know what I find out if anyone is interested.
ETA: I just figured out This was his order, I'm going to contact them and see if they can share anything.
This is so exciting! Makes me want to just dump the rest of Core 4/American History and get going on this.

When you study Father Damien, you can also study Mother Marianne Cope. The Daughters of St. Paul have a children's book available (Along the Path of the Gospel series) about her. Karen

I found this neat "Non-Western Cultures and Eastern Hemisphere" page of lesson plans for a 6th grader - looks like there are lots of liturature suggestions, etc!

From Bethlehem, The Weka Feather Cloak looks good too!
Now I feel like I should go backwards in core 5 to add those!
For core 5 we will also add St Tekla from Ethiopia (isnt that a mosaic book?) and St Jerome and his Lion as well!

Thanks Amy - this is great. We are using World Trailguide and a very similar format with similar books - but she has some movies I had forgotten about

We've been spreading out the Core 5 books to match our history... we did some with modern history last year, some with ancient history this year, and we'll be reading some with medieval history next year. As far as science goes, Amy, I think physical geography/earth science would tie in nicely... think the Himalayas (mountains, mountain building); earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis (the Ring of Fire, Japan, Indonesia); the Rift Valley in Eastern Africa; deserts and desertification (the Sahara); meteorology (hurricanes and tropical waves forming off the coast of Africa; cyclones, monsoons); astronomy (different stars for the Southern hemisphere)...
Ok, gotta go break up a fight, but a few ideas there!

We did the Core 5 books this past semester with all three of my children and have LOVED it! I formulated my own schedule, divided up the books, skipped some books and added others. I'm so glad we did it this portion of the world. We have learned so much. We're on our penultimate unit at the moment (Middle East) and have only Africa to do after that. It's been a lovely semester.
