Ok, survey time!
Here is the original link which prompts this survey: Catholic Children's Bible Study
And here is the yahoo group where I will be posting the chapters as they are sort of developed: Catholic Children's Family Bible Study.
What are we all looking for in a Catholic Children's Bible Study?
Goal: **The ability of the family to read through a passage of Scripture, pull age appropriate typology and other significance from the passages in relation to the "big picture" of Salvation History - and have everyone walk away having learned something at their level.
Ages?
Current suggestions:
*8 to 14
*An adaptation for younger children (as compared to one set for ages 3-14, allowing the older children more in-depth discussion - ability to keep all ages together)
What type of activities to include?
Current suggestions:
*maps
*timelines - build a timeline throughout (choice of styles)
*games
*songs
*Scripture copywork and memorization
*skits (simple!)
*crafts
*science experiments or demos
Suggested specific games/activities:
*Simple drawings of various Biblical objects to promote discussion and recall of Bible events and person (I have a set of cards around here somewhere to pull LOTS of ideas from - this may be a small piece included with the main material, plus a supplement for further study for those interested).
What lists should the children learn?
Current suggestions:
• "I am" statements from John
• fruits of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit
• seven sacraments (as pointed out in the Bible - a LOT of typology in this one!)
• mysteries of the Rosary correlating with particular Scripture passages
• spiritual and corporal works of mercy (as/when presented in the Bible)
• Commandments
• Apostles
• Books of the Bible
• the prophets
• Judges
• Kings
• (cardinal virtues & seven capital sins and the corresponding virtues – as they fit with particular passages in the Bible and exemplified by particular individuals or groups)
*7 days of Creation
*10 plagues of Egypt
*12 Tribes
*Beatitudes
*NT authors and books
Other pieces to incorporate?
Current suggestions:
classical art prints
Gregorian-style chants (??)
references to the CCC
References to lives of the saints as/if/when they fit
Music of the Jewish culture at various times
Information on Jewish celebrations as described in the Bible
Style/format?
Oral format (as opposed to straight activity pages)
Option of spiral bound (with hard covers) and 3 hole punched
Anything else to consider?
**Not just multi-age, but multi-level of family involvement
**Keep the entire family together for a true family study
**Inexpensive and as few "volumes" as possible (current thinking is one or at the most 2)
***NOTE: Several additional activities as suggested below and elsewhere I am including in my own notes but not above in order to shorten this post :) Many of these activities I could put in a "optional" section - so each lesson will have two parts: Bare Bones, then options for additional work based on the particular children of the family.
I will also include a list of "extra" resources (not required for the main study, but nice to have if possible). One that I will suggest right now is Sing Bible Prayer Songs CD from CHC - it has things like the prayers of the rosary set to music, the books of the Bible (ALL the books!!!!), the St. Michael novena and others.... It's great!

Having posted this to another small group of homeschooling friends, I've incorporated a few other suggestions as well. It has also been suggested to have a yahoo group for the in-process files - to share ideas, files and feedback. More to come.
Also, for those wanting to get started with something, I strongly suggest the cards and timeline from Ascension Press: Kids Timeline. My son is 4 (will be 5 in April) and just loves this game. Get the card-game and the timeline and that will be "enough" - the coloring book is a great extra, and the other items can be made at home or not. We play a memory game with the cards and place them on the timeline in order - I will read the name of the event or person or the names of the Bible books until he begins to recognize them on his own. After 2 months of owning this, he's starting to just look through them and put them in order, without the timeline to help him!

Ages: I think I would want it to span 8 to 14.
Types of activities: Crafts, science experiments or demos
Lists: the books, the prophets, the judges, the kings
Other: short, simple skits the children can act out
That's all I can think of right now.

I think the lists ought to include the seven capital sins and the corresponding virtues, the cardinal virtues, the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, the mysteries of the Rosary, and the seven sacraments, as well as the fruits of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit. It could also include the "I am" statements from John.
I personally prefer an oral format as opposed to activity pages; it is really wonderful to be able to go around the table and have each child read a section aloud and then discuss that section together.
One of the games in the original Bible Study Guide consisted of several cards with simple drawings of objects such as stars, pigs, trees, rocks,a shepherd's crook, etc. You show the children the picture and they have to tell a Bible story that pertains to that object. A great review as well as narration game! My kids LOVED this one. Whenever the pig came up, they all shouted, "Pigmeat!"

I don't know that I'd focus on the Cardinal Virtues, Rosary, Saints, etc. There are tons of resources for that kind of stuff already, imho. I am looking more for a study of the bible, book by book. Catholic typology would be a wonderful addition.
I'm very interested in the mapping and timelining, and in scripture memory verses and narration of the stories (I like the idea of the stories being generated by pictures, too). And at this point, I am really determined to make this a whole family project. I don't want to leave out my will-be 4 and 7 yr olds. Laura Berquist talks about how kids these ages will memorize dumb stuff (such as the songs of tv shows), so why not have them memorize poetry or the Baltimore Catechism instead. I figure if they can memorize poetry or the BC, they can memorize scripture just as well.

I'm thinking that an effective way to teach typology would be to juxtapose OT stories with their NT fulfillment. Bible Study Guide does go back and forth between the Old and New Testaments (it doesn't go from the beginning to the end of the Bible). So, the children could study Abraham and end with his sacrifice of Isaac, and then immediately after study the Passion. One problem here is that there are so many types of Christ you'd be back and forth a lot! Another idea might be to be sure you studied the type at some point before the fulfillment, and then when the fulfillment is accomplished the study could refer back to the OT type. Thinking aloud here, but I think option 2 would work more smoothly. The Scripture Memory Box would compliment this study nicely. My 6 yr. old memorizes Scripture along with his older brothers using this system with no problem.

Another activity that has worked great here is based on ideas from CHC and Jeff Cavins. We cut out the pictures in the Catholic Children's Bible and laminated them onto colored cardstock. I chose the color to correspond to the divisions of the Bible used in the Bible Timeline Band. Then I numbered them on the back in order. Each color group was put on a separate ring. The children then would put the pictures in order, adding new pictures as we studied more stories.(If my camera worked, I'd send you a photo). They could check them themselves by turning over the cards and seeing if the numbers were in order. This way they learned not only the order of the events, but also the major divisions of Biblical history. I'd do this before I'd memorize the kings of Israel and Judah!

Sorry I keep posting here, I'm just sooo excited about this project! Books has a point about the Rosary, sacraments, etc., I just like to do everything at once!
How about adding the 7 days of Creation, the 10 plagues of Egypt, the 12 Tribes, the Beatitudes, and the writers of the NT and their respective books to the memory list?

Actually, we've done that before and I have a stack of pictures already laminated. I forgot about that! That would be a really nice addition, and the youngers in particular would be good at that, I think. Great idea.
As for typology, I am thinking a decent Scott Hahn type book to read along with myself and then communicate to the kids might work. He does tons of that stuff in his studies. That to me is the most significant Catholic aspect to Bible Study. There are many references to Mary in the OT scriptures too and I'd like to hit those as well.

Yup. I would be totally up for memorizing the 12 apostles, who wrote what books, and the ability to list all the OT and NT books. Somewhere I used to have a tape that put the OT and NT books to song. I think a child ate it at some point.  I'd also love for older children to memorize scriptures that relate, such as the Isaiah sections that refer to Jesus' crucifixion alongside the NT accounts.
Sometimes I think about Corrie Ten Boom and Maximillian Kolbe and how it must have been without the encouragement of the scriptures. There really is wisdom in hiding these things in our heart where no one can take them away from us. I think that's why I really want to focus on scripture memory as opposed to the Virtues or BC type things.

My oldest will only be 5 in May, so I would like something that I could start with him but we could continue to grow with as a family over the years.

I thought I'd posted this one here, but I don't see it. Books, have you looked at Understanding the Scriptures by Scott Hahn. It's part of the Didache Series and is really great. Probably good from 8th to 12th grades, though designed for high school. A strong 7th grader or one with you helping/discussing could do it, too.

Caroline~ For "hyper-links", Click on the little "green/blue-globe / chain-link" box right above where you are typing in your text. The box that appears if for the ACTUAL text that you want to appear in the post.....in this case "Understanding the Scriptures". Then the next box will be for the actual web address that you copy from another open window, then paste into that box. Click OK. And, it should appear.
