Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would appreciate some specific CD recommendations for Advent and Christmas music.

I thought I would ask you wonderful people here instead of digging through Amazon!

Thanks,
Nicole

Here are two Cds that were highly recommended on CCM last year. We ended up getting them and really enjoying them.
Legends of St. Nicholas - Anonymous 4
Ancient Noels

MacBeth's website lists many of her favorites. I've not been disappointed with her suggestions!

Also, something that I did last year was get a Polish Christmas and Portuguese Christmas carol CD from Folkways. Folkways has recordings from old master tapes of music from Monitor Records from around the world. I really enjoy what we've gotten. One of the CDs (the Polish one) was one that my dad had a record of that I remember from every Christmas growing up. I'd been looking for years for a copy and unable to find one until I stumbled on this site. Since I saw that they also had a Portuguese Christmas one we got that as well. My husband is of Portuguese heritage. We spent last Christmas focusing on those family cultural connections withour holiday music. This summer I got a Basque Christmas CD so have another to add to the heritage connection. Anyway I know that Folkways has Christmas CDs from many different countries so if you have a cultural connection you'd like to make I suggest looking there.

Besides what Mary M. has mentioned, we've also enjoyed "Once as I remembered" by John Eliot Gardiner--includes several Advent tunes; "Everywhere Christmas" by the Trapp Family Singers, Anthology vol. 1---includes several Advent songs, as well; "Sing We Christmas" by Chanticleer; and the cd by Emily Smith that CHC sells--it has several Advent songs on it, too. It's really hard to find cds exclusively devoted to Advent. The Brothers of Hope have an Advent cd that is nice, but very new, lots of drums and stuff---of course, my children really like it! I tend to go for the more traditional stuff (can you tell from the list? )

Some Advent hymns to look for include:
O Come O Come Emmanuel
Angelus ad Virginem
Gabriel's Message
Creator Alme Siderum/Creator of the Stars of Night
People Look East
O Come, Divine Messiah
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Benedictus Que Venit (Taize, I think)
Maria Walks Amid the Thorns (Maria durch ein Dornwald Ging)
Savior of the Nations, Come
You Heavens, Dew Drop From Above
Shepherds, Awake
Dona Nobis Pacem (not technically Advent, but certainly appropriate!)

Lo, How A Rose Ere Blooming is often included as Advent, probably because of its haunting melody...

I've actually tried to get a recording made of these Advent songs, but the project keeps floundering. Maybe by next year!

Thanks Ladies for these suggestions -- dh will be getting the "Legends of St. Nicholas" in his shoe on Dec6th -- he's one of those where we can't watch or listen to Christmas music until the final week before Christmas -- so any advent music, books or movies we can get really make him happy.

Kelly -- thanks for the list of hymns to look for -- this is a great help for me (I'm a cradle Catholic with a post-Vatican 2 education -- we were too ecumenical to learn about the Catholic faith, but all the others we kow pretty well )

Blessings all!

I have this on hold to pick up at the library. Another one I recommend is the Incarnation CD by the seminarians at St. John Vianney seminary. I love the arrangements, especially for O Come Emmanuel. Plus the proceeds go to the seminary.

We're still enjoying our Christmas carols, and I wanted to throw out some of our favorites.

Bells of Dublin by the Chieftains. GREAT!!

Love anything by the Cambridge Singers.

I'm appreciating King's College and Chanticleer, and wonder if anyone has favorite albums by either, particularly Christmas.

This CD from the Magdalen College Choir was recommended at our homeschool gathering tonight as an excellent CD for Advent Songs. On Jordan's Bank

I don't recall it being mentioned yet so thought I'd add it as the season fast approaches.

Bridget wrote a lovely post at O Night Divine regarding her family's Advent "joyful noise". There is a cute picture of Bridget as a child too.

My Tallis phase has lead me to this CD: Christmas with the Tallis Scholars. Ah...

Yes, it's approaching way too fast! I couldn't make the mp3 work...I really wanted to preview before buying.
