Some of you may know Sabine Summerville.
Today, her son, Michael (who will be two in January), fell into his aunt's pool.
They are at the hospital now and he is still not breathing on his own...
Please, please pray.
****UPDATE #1******
Ok, I just got off the phone with Grace, one of Michael's sisters. When they got Michael to the hospital, he was unresponsive. Now, he has responded with a reflexive leg movement, his pupils are no longer dialated and he is having convulsions with coughing....
Please continue praying.
I am reminded of Father Edward Warren's admonition that, "Prayer changes history!"
Thank you all so very much,
******UPDATE #2*******
Since the first update, there haven't been any changes. Grace just mentioned that it will be 3-4 days before they know if he'll make it and at that they won't know the extent of any brain damage.
On top of that, Sabine is currently being interviewed by CPS.
*****UPDATE #3*********
Ok, families,
I just spoke directly with Sabine.
Michael has basic brain stem function but they do have him on a ventilator as his breathing is too shallow.
Yesterday, at the hospital, they had resucitated his heart and since then, he has not required anymore medication.
He is on insulin as his blood sugar was high as is common when your body is in stress.
And as it looks right now, his heart/kidney/liver are all functioning well.
They are keeping him in an induced state of hypothermia in order to reduce swelling and his metabolism.
Michael's doctor is from Phoenix and sadly, has had a lot of experience with children drowning. There are three levels of drowning with surviving and Michael has experienced the most severe level.
Sabine is grateful for the prayers and asks us to maintain them. She said she is having a difficult time trying to pray coherently.
Sabine did also mention that it seems as if he is trying to move his arms and open his eyes...
Please, please, please keep praying.
Sabine did say, "Don't waste any time in anger with your children...it's a huge waste of time."
Thank you for your prayers and sacrifices.
*****UPDATE #4********
Hey Families,
Sabine just called and said that they are very cautiously optimistic but by no means is he out of the woods.
Michael had a CT scan this pm and there was very little swelling. His ventricles were clear which means spinal fluid is flowing and the docs were able to see differences between clear and grey matter.
Sabine sounded so much better but she did stress that he is not out of the woods so please continue to pray.
I know that they are all so tremendously grateful to you all.
****UPDATE # 5 - Friday Morning*****
This is from Michael's Aunt, Beate:
"Keep storming Heaven like the insistant friends that you are. God is certainly listening. Yesterday afternoon Michael opened his eyes a lot, but the staff basically didn't think this was significant. I asked St, Therese to give Sabine a sign and a bit later Sabine said that she knew Michael tried reaching for her.
Later that evening, Michael became agitated during a procedure - definitely a good sign. They ran an EEG and while not giving us any info because it has to go through neurology, etc, they didn't seem dissappointed.
After all this, they started being very strict with visitation policies - no longer were the bunch of us encouraged/allowed to gather around sweet baby Michael, sit on the bed, count fingers and toes, etc. I feel they were letting us do this in order to give us closure.
Later during the night, Michael actually required sedation and Sabine was told to stop talking as he is reacting to her voice and his bp needs to stay down. Today and tomorrow are more critical days - keep storming Heaven for a miracle. We weep and hope and pray -
Love,Beate"
*******UPDATE #6*********
I spoke with Sabine earlier today and she sounded weary.
The good news is is that she got to hold Michael today and he is now officially off of life support.
However, Sabine did say that they are still facing ENORMOUS challenges and that she still needs your prayers and notes of encouragment and support.
Please keep praying...here below is an update from Beate, Michael's aunt. This is from their Caringbridge site:
"I just returned from saying good-night to the Michael man. He is still on his own, but working so hard which is difficult to watch, esp. for Sabine. She is exhausted physically and emotionally - so I'm asking God to grant her a restful night.
As for Michael, continued prayers for the return of his swallowing reflex.
How blessed we are to have such a wonderful prayer family.
God's Peace be with you ~ Beate"
***UPDATE #7**********
Hey Families,
I spoke with Sabine a couple of hours ago and she said that Michael is having a good day. He's swallowed a little bit but they do still need prayers for him to regain it completely - and HE'S COUGHING!!!
Here's the update I just received from his caringbridge site:
"Hello everyone. I just wanted to quickly let you know how Michael is doing today. He his breathing a little easier now than he was the last time I got to see him, and he is much more relaxed. The docotrs put in a new, more flexible feeding tube this morning. Michael just had a little workout with the physical therapist, so he's pretty tuckered out right now. He is coughing every once in a while and even sneezed a couple of times earlier today. It seems strange to be so excited to hear a child cough and sneeze, but for Michael these are good things.
Thank you all for your continued support, and please keep praying for our precious Michael Man.
-Christopher"
I know that the family continues to be extremely grateful for your prayers and notes and all of the encouragement!
Thank you!
*******UPDATE #8************
Great news, families!
Michaelman yawned today! And he may be undergoing a trachioscopy (SP?) and g-tube surgery on Friday - BUT if he can manage to swallow MORE than he is right now (which isn't enough) that may get cancelled.
Sabine's cell phone died so that's the biggest update I have right now but we did talk about her calling me in the morning.
Sabine is SUPER grateful for your prayers and encouragement. If you'd like to visit Michaelman's caringbridge page and leave her a note, please feel free. All of them find the notes SUPER UPLIFTING!
Love and prayers,
*******UPDATE #9************
Hey Families,
Yesterday, I got some really great news about Michael and just wanted to share with you the fruits of your prayers....
This is from his CaringBridge website:
"Ok, I know I have said it before and then was really long-winded :-) but this truly needs to be short and quick!
In the past, Michael could hold his head up momentarily if you picked it up for him. Today, he began picking his head up while on his tummy! Then while we were walking with me carrying him in a sling, he picked his head up off my shoulder. He did this many times! Also, just now in bed, his legs were up on a stuffed animal with his knees bent and he kept straightening them out and relaxing them, over and over. It was very awesome!
Thank you dear Jesus!
Sabine"
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Please continue to pray for his continued healing....

Nina,
My friend is in TX...
I have an update of sorts....I'm sorry I don't have more info and it isn't more clear.
Grace called a little while ago. Michael has regained some function. (I don't know what that means, though.).
I'm reminded of Father Warren, Nina, when he used to say, "Prayer changes history!"
Please keep praying!

I'm posting here to keep everything in this thread.
The emerency novena or "flying" novena referred to is praying nine Memorares.
Remember O most loving Virgin Mary that never was it known in any age that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession was left unaided, inspired by this confidence, I fly to thee O Virgin of Virgins my Mother, to you do I come, before you I stand sinful and sorrowful, O Mother of the Word Incarnate despise not my petitions but in your mercy graciously hear and answer them.
Amen.
