something that ties biblical stories in with the rest of history. I have the Mystery of History, but I wondered if there was something that was Catholic? Any suggestions? Also, does anyone know where I can get Catholic timeline figures?

Mary,
Marcia Neill, a Catholic homeschooler in California , has created a timeline that sounds as though it may be just what you are looking for. It's the "Catholic World History Timeline and Guide: Creation thru the Present" Besides providing pertinent information about the time periods and what happened in each, it also provides 2"x2" cards with pictures of people. They are black and white, and are copies of real artwork, which makes them nice (tho small-but that's good for using on a timeline). I found it especially useful for the Early Church era, because there's so little information and so few images available. She also has cards for ALL the popes, another plus. She has compiled a prodigious amount of information in one spot, all done in complete adherence to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
Although it isn't cheap, it represents such a vast amount of information-conveniently collected in one location- that I felt it was worth it (tho can't remember the exact price, just that it was on the pricey side). It was first published in 1999, so pricing and format may have changed since I bought mine. Don't worry, Mary, the Timeline is really thorough and definitely worth the $$$, even if you only use part of it. It's a very handy reference source, and the pictures really are such a help, for the Early Church, especially, when so little else is available. The cards Marcia has for 20th century people are mostly photographs (on cardstock), too, which is really nice.
I've found that when we're doing a specialized period-like the colonial era, now-we often end up putting postcards, or photographs of places we've visited, or cutouts from brochures or color copies of paintings on our Timeline, to make the Timeline more colorful and eyecatching, and immediate. But, unless you have such pictures handy, you're better off having cards like in Marcia's Timeline, or xeroxing pics from the encyclopedia. Either way, we often find ourselves coloring in the line drawings, to give the Timeline that extra bit of color and panache! That also gives the little ones a way to be involved in the Timeline.

We switched this year to a Book of Centuries instead of a time line. This is because I couldn't keep the little ones from messing it up (they were really just trying to add their creative touch!  ) and we really don't have the wall space for it anymore. Anyway, after seeing the CWHTG above,(  ) I'm really tempted to get one to use for the Book of Centuries ds is working on. Do those of you who have one think that it would work for that purpose? Would I be wasting too much money by not using the actual time line?

That's exactly how we've used it. We've put Marcia's images (along with many others!) into our Book of the Centuries. It IS a lot of money, but we've had it for so many years that the expense has been spread out quite a bit. Also, it sure beats the cost of mass quantities of color xeroxes! Would I do it this way again? If we were doing the Early Church era, yes, probably, but not if my budget were really tight.

Hi Becky,
I don't think you'd be wasting your money at all. The pictures in Marcia's book are meant to be cut out & used, but there's no copyright restriction (from what I can see) so I photocopy them. That's worked out great for us since our 2 1/2 year old has already ripped a few off the timeline ... We also plan to use them in the kids' Book of Centuries. Let's see -with a timeline & 6 kids, I can divide the cost by 7. Hey, that's not that expensive!

Becky, that's what I plan to do with them. Each of my kids has their own Book of Time from Sonlight.
