Just buy A Right to be Merry elsewhere, as Ignatius prints it. |

Can you expound on this Jenn? Why would I not buy it from CHC? Is there a big difference?
I remember Kelly raving about this book and recently noticed it in the CHC catalog. I had intended to buy it from CHC for my rising 9th grader to read next year. But now I want to be sure I buy the best version, if there is a difference. Thanks!

There I go again only typing partially what I'm thinking. I just meant it's not a CHC exlusive, it's printed by Ignatius, so you can competively price it for one, and also not be weighed down by CHC's return policy. CHC might have the best deal, and if you're buying from them already, even better.
I don't think there are different editions. The book is priceless. And if your daughter likes that book, I have more of that genre to recommend. |

Jenn, I'd love to hear your additional recommendations within that genre!
My eleven-year-old daughter is just finishing "A Right to Be Merry," and she loves it! But I don't have any ideas for similar books from here...
If this is hijacking, I'd be happy to start a new thread. Or you can pm me. (But I'm guessing others are also intrigued by your recommendations offer... ) |

I'll be happy to oblige. I really considered a religious vocation (actually entered the convent in my high school years), so I did a bit of reading to help discern.
There were two other nice discussions already:
Book about life in a convent?
Nuns
I'm listing what I have and read. Most are out of print, unfortunately. There is one title I can't place right now (something about Mice...) and then a lovely book from the Daughters of St. Paul about their convent life. My copy got ruined, and I can't remember the name. If I think of either, I'll add.
Poor Clare Nuns, Mother Mary Francis:
A Right to Be Merry
Forth and Abroad is the sequel.
And all her writings are beautiful. Strange Gods Before Me is so meditative, but she always has great humor. Ignatius Press is printing many of her titles. While I'm not a religious, I still fine so much meat in her writings.
Dominicans
MY FAVORITE: Sister Mary Jean Dorcy,
Shepherd's Tartan. I picked this one up in 7th grade in the back of a church. Started my whole journey. Very humorous, lovely, and memorable.
Never the Golden City is her account of being stationed in the southwest.
Sister Maryanna, O.P
With Love and Laughter
Rarer, hard-to-find, or Expensive titles:
Maria del Rey:
Bernie Becomes a Nun
Mother Catherine Thomas:
My Beloved: The Story of a Carmelite Nun
Joan Lexau:
Convent Life
Guide to the Catholic Sisterhoods in the United States
This book is extremely rare, but I remember just checking it out over and over again. It features all the orders in the US around 1964. No stories, just pictures of each habit, explanation and information.
There were a couple of books that gave examples of all walks of life by the DSP. One called Choose Your Tomorrow and the other I'll have to find.
Wish I had more in-print books to share, but I checked bookfinder.com before I wrote the above to check prices and availability.

For older person's reading, Rumer Godden's
In This House of Brede and
Ten for Sorrow, Ten for Joy
are beautiful novels on life in the convent. There are some adult subjects that are treated in both, so previewing would be necessary.

Thank you, Jenn.
Not to hijack another thread, but do you have any suggestions for priestly reading as well?
God bless,

This is wonderful, Jenn! Thank you so much!
I read Bernie Becomes a Nun over and over as a young girl. I loved that book! All the good photos... Too bad it's out of print and so hard to come by!
I am going to be checking out all your suggestions for my girls. I never knew that A Right to Be Merry had a sequel!

I do have some suggestions for boys and altar boys type stuff. I can post those suggestions in a bit if interested. Most are OOP, of course.
Then I would suggest some biographies, but for teenage years or older. Treasure in Clay by Archbishop Sheen and Seven Storey Mountain Thomas Merton (probably the only Merton I would recommend, but it is good).
Thinking of other ideas. It's an area I have to work out, since I do have boys. I did provide some reading material for my younger brother, but not as much as my personal interest in convent life.
