Diego Rivera (December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957, born “Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez” in Guanajuato City, Mexico) he was the son of Mexican-Jewish parents who had converted to Catholicism. Although Diego Rivera was raised and educated as a Catholic, he as an adult proclaimed himself an atheist. See reference

He is most famous for his large murals, executed in the nascent Mexicanist style. He lived during a time of revolution and rising nationalism in his native country, when peasants and poor farmers of largely Native American and Mestizo ancestry sought to overthrow the land-owning Spanish Creole class that had ruled Mexico since it gained independence in 1821. This was accompanied by the birth of a brand of Mexican art that combined the influences of Pre-Columbian Native American culture with contemporary European trends. I think it needs to be said that he was an incredibly gifted artist who lived a publicly scandalous life. His art includes some nudity. I struggled over choosing this artist, as I dislike personally quite a lot of his life story.
He had a definite love of his people and a longing to see racial equality in Mexico and beyond.
I just fell in love with the beautiful peasant art. His painting "Portrait of Modesta and Inesita" was one that I felt captured the simple love of Motherhood, and the innocent beauty of a child.
He also painted Classicist "Cubist" paintings, which I in the past have not appreciated, until I saw Rivera's portrait of "Motherhood- Angelina and the Child Diego".

I found it very helpful, Rebecca! I am a total neophyte when it comes to the painting world, though, so I don't have much to contribute here.

We just finished reading A Weekend with Diego Rivera from that "weekend" series on famous artists. I give it a clean review for how his personal life is discussed - nothing problematic. But that being said, it's hard to find a balance. I don't want the kids thinking he was this great guy either. It doesn't mention he was a communist and makes his political views sound altruistic - but then again it is told from his point of view - as if he were speaking to the reader.
It was interesting though to find out how he was involved with the Mexican government in a "cultural renewal" in Mexico following the Mexican revolution. This was a time of persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico. So as a rabbit trail, I think we are going to cover several of the Mexican martyrs who lost their lives in the Cristero rebellion of the 1920's - like Bl. Jose Sanchez del Rio, Bl. Miguel Pro, and the Saints of the Knights of Columbus. Glory Stories has great CDs covering them.
Another book that has an art activity for studying Rivera's work is Mary Ann Kohl's Discovering Great Artists. She suggests getting a slide you like and projecting it with a projector onto a large piece of paper on a wall.(Like any of us have those anymore  ) Draw around the main shapes that are projected onto the paper. Outline the main shapes (don't worry about detail) Paint the pencil drawn mural with tempera paints to create a mural in Rivera style.
