Western Diamondback Rattlesnake! (scroll down link to see pic)
Well...not exactly in our backyard but just down our road - WAY too close for comfort! My dh and 14yods spotted the 2.5 footer while driving home. It was crossing the street sluggishly. They watched it for 10 minutes and got great pics (which I hope to post.) Anyway...just needed to share my heebies jeebies  .

Ack!!! When I saw the thread title come up, I actually said to myself, "I hope it wasn't a rattlesnake!" 
I guess, um, "cool!" for dh and ds!  And many prayers for you!!! We just went to a herpetology class last week, and I actually had a nightmare about being bitten by a Lake Erie water snake. I don't know what I'd do if I lived near you! Have you sighted them before, close to home? Do you have to do anything special, ie. preventative, when going out for walks or hikes? Do I sound like a naive northerner who only has one very shy venomous reptile that is native her state?

Ack is right, Stacy! This *is* our first siting in 6 years! Well, not quite...I almost stepped on a baby one within our first year here while on a nature walk. I was talking with a friend and my dd saw it on the path as my foot was heading toward it and she knocked me out of the way - phew! It was sleeping, than goodness.
The main thing we are in the habit of is to always be aware that critters can be hiding in any concealed/shaded area. For a family refresher, I found these rattlesnake precautions.

Oh, that has been my son's fear. Dh had run over a few snakes in the past week and his first question: did it have a rattle?
That's just too close for comfort for me!

This morning we were visited by a flock of about 20 wild turkeys. They were here about a month ago as well. I've never seen more than one or two wild turkeys at a time; seeing them at all has been very rare in my life. But there they were!

Yesterday I was looking out my window and saw a sea lion grab a seagull right off the water and eat it! It was amazing!
He was a large male sea lion and we have seen him catch big salmon before and toss them around like toys, but this was a first.

We saw an American kestrel on our feeder the other day. The blue on the wings was really striking when it flew away.

We were watching a pair of cardinals at the feeder today, and "caught" them feeding each other.
It looks like they may be kissing :-)

Love the cardinals.
We had a small tortise in our yard this weekend and two mallard ducks in our yard Monday (it was a male/female pair - one had the green head and the other didn't).

Not in my backyard, in my house a couple of weeks ago! It was fun getting it back out! I think it's a Carolina Wren, but I'm not great at bird ID.

We have a Black-bellied Whistling-duck
not in our yard but right down the street in our neighborhood pond!
This is causing high excitement for the biding community here.
Yesterday in the early morning ds and I rode down to the pond to bird hunt with our camera. I didn't know what to expect- we'd heard the bird was in our area, but we didn't know if we'd see it. Ds was very anxious, as his favorite local bird expert had given him "homework" of getting a picture of this bird.
So ds is scanning the banks of the pond anxiously, trying to walk very quietly and not even breathe so as not to scare it away (if it is even there). Then I look on the bank about 20 yards away from where we are standing, and there it is! It was just hanging out, doing its duck thing without a care in the world.
It was too funny- we were stunned for a moment, then we started scrambling for the camera. We got many nice pictures.
The bird experts are not sure what this bird is doing in our area- it might be lost or it may be an escapee from a zoo somewhere.
