Sorry for the lateness of this! Several factors--including having a few projects turn out less than ideal--contributed to my missing yesterday to post. To make up, I am posting two very simple and related art projects that you can use with this coloring page of Our Lady of Guadalupe, or adapt to your own design.
First, CORN SYRUP PAINTING
(From 365 Art and Craft Activities)
You need:
light corn syrup
empty egg carton
food coloring
paper to print/draw on (regular paper will do but you might prefer card stock since the paint is thick)
paint brush
water to rinse brush between colors
Pour a little corn syrup in as many of the egg carton compartments as you want colors for your picture. I used five--yellow, orange, red, blue-green, brown. (I used a Sharpie marker for black.) Put about three to five drops of food coloring into each compartment to make your paint.
For blue-green, I used two blue drops and one green.
For brown, I used one drop each of yellow, red, and green.
For orange, two yellow and one red.
For the others I think I used four drops.
Print your picture, and then paint it! It's easiest to paint from left to right as much as possible if you're right-handed, or right to left if you're left-handed, because the paints are so sticky. Also, you'll want to put the finished picture in a safe place when you're done and give them a day or two to dry. The paints stay tacky to the touch for a long time. But when they dry they still have a pretty, glossy shine.
Next is STAINED GLASS CANDLE HOLDER
You need:
clean glass jar
black Sharpie marker
glue (I used Mod Podge)
empty egg carton or paper plate
food coloring
small paint brush
With the Sharpie, draw the picture you're using on the outside of the glass jar. For the Guadalupe coloring page, I saved the image on my desktop, imported it into a word processing document and formatted it to adjust the size to fit my jar. (You can also use a copier to reduce the image as needed.) Then I printed and put the picture on the inside of the jar and traced it. I left out a lot of details--I found that fewer intricacies made this project turn out better.
Mix the glue and food coloring the same way as with the corn syrup above. I only used one or two drops of coloring but I think the colors would have been brighter if I had used more. The glue didn't run as badly as the corn syrup, and I didn't need as much, so I used a paper plate to mix them.
Paint your picture with the glue paints-probably going from the center out is best. The thicker you can lay the glue, the darker your color will be. It dries transparent, so if you paint over the marker, it will still show through. Try steadying or holding the jar from the inside so you don't accidentally smudge your paints. Let dry and then light a tea light candle or votive and place it inside your jar.
I read a similar project using acrylic paints mixed with glue, but I don't know how well candlelight would shine through. I can't wait to try it--probably with a rose design for the roses of Castile in Juan Diego's tilma.

Thank you- this was a fun one. My kids had a ball- painting with the corn syrup was a new experience, and the colors were really vivid.
