Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just started reading this book last night, and already I can tell it's going to be a blessing to me! I really needed to hear what the author had to say in the first chapter, and I know there's hope yet for us.

This morning my dgs had a particularly loud meltdown over cereal, and I was able to work through that without getting upset myself. Eventually he was able to calm down, and he's eating his cereal somewhat happily. I can't wait to read more in this book, and I'm so glad to have found it!

Here's an excerpt:

"Once spanking was the quick fix. Now medicating is the new quick fix. Neither teaches faith, hope, love, respect, or peace. Neither shows the child how to control anger, get along with others, or love her or himself...Instead of collaborating with her on a problem, we step in and do things to her, or use a medication to mask her struggle."

"We must search for the particular key that this child is able to use and find the right manner and the right moment for presenting it to her."

"It is an unhealthy burden for a child to be "bad" or "good". We must relieve every child of that burden and allow all of them to be works of art in progress."

I should have added that this book is written by Donna Goertz, who has been teaching in a Montessori school tht she founded in Texas for 30 years.

Vicki, I just spotted your quote from this book on another thread - I bought it following a recommendation on a UK email group and am almost finished reading. I agree, it is an excellent book.

I particularly liked her checklist for family life for the early elementary child ... so much so I put it on my blog, here.
