We are finishing up our unit on Very Last First Time/the Arctic/Eskimos and I thought that I would post the plans that we used. Almost all of the ideas came from Five in a Row Vol. 1 and from the FIAR message board. Still, I thought that the information might be useful to some.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Thank you for sharing. We also read this book recently, as part of a History Pocket's unit study of Native Americans. Love the edible igloos idea and the night sky experiment with the black paper and clear nail polish. And I agree, I don't like mussels. Thanks again!

I'm glad someone else is enjoying the study! Thanks for responding! 
The edible igloos went over so well that the kids continued making them until the marshmallows were all gone. With each igloo, I encouraged more slathering of peanut butter and more "holes" in the "ice" (fewer marshmallows) so the snack got healthier and healthier as we went a long! One of my children is not a big apple fan, so this was a great way to get him to eat.

I just wanted to let you know that I copied your plans and will probably use them in January of next year.
Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness in sharing...gosh when I use them it will be almost three years later!

Simona,
The edible igloo and night sky projects are in the word document that is linked at the top of this thread. Edible igloos: apple halves slathered w/ peanut butter and mini marshmallows to look like an igloo complete with it's low tunnel door. Night sky: make aurora borealis -- see word doc for details.

Thank you Janette,
I am so hoping to get it together enough to do some FIAR projects with my 7 yo and I'm going to use this one this winter. I am so thankful to all you who do the planning as I move along to the 16th homeschooling year and seem to lack the "creating" ability I used to have.

Julia, from what I remember, it was *cute* but not what I had expected. If it's for very young children I think it's fine, pretty much a counting book, but don't quote me on that  HTH somewhat!

We read the Polar Bear Math book too, but I can't remember if it was with this unit or another. It teaches about fractions through the experience of raising two polar bear cubs at the zoo. I would say it's an elementary school level book -- 2nd to 4th grade roughly. The younger kids would enjoy the book even if the fraction part went over their heads, and even a 6th grader could easily use it as review.
