You know you're part of the 4Real family when a 4Real Louisiana friend asks you to come spend a day with their group and enjoy a cup of tea.
Then the little tea tete-a-tete broadens to include a storyhour.
Then the little social blossoms into a whole weekend of 4Real fun!!!!
Then one of those 4Real Louisiana lady (Colleen) calls you up from Wal-Mart to brainstorm over some southern-style 4Real conference plans.
And, while the two of you are talking on the phone, another 4Real Louisiana lady (Alice C.) passes by and there is a litany of "Oh, my goodness!!!" "Guess who I'm on the phone with!?" "This is so funny!!!" "I can't believe..."
We don't want to take away anyone's plans for the Big conference but for those of us down south who just can't go, here's a proactive alternative:
On August 10, 11, 12 (same weekend as the Big Conference in Virginia) some of us will be getting together for our own mini 4Real Pow-Wow. In essence, we'll be "united in the spirit" with those in Virginia. So nobody has any excuse to feel left out.
Colleen and I discussed a very simple (tentative and flexible) schedule:
Friday (August 10)
Families Get-Together for Bonfire & Hot Dog Roast
Saturday (August 11)
- 10-11 AM---Catholic Mosaic Presentation
- 11-12 Noon---Storyhour using an August book from Catholic Mosaic
- 1-3 PM---Mom's Only Luncheon
- 3 PM---Tea Time using Alice Cantrell's new Tea and Cake with the Saints
- Charlotte Mason Discussion on Art/Music/Literature
Sunday (August 12)
Mass followed by family picnic and nature study at the pond
The mini-conference will be held in Abbeville, LA.
The activities on Saturday will be held at Breath of Life Catholic Bookstore. The owners have very generously offered the use of their bookstore to us and the description that Colleen gave me of the pond for the Sunday picnic and nature study sounds simply divine.
I can't wait. This will truly be more of a retreat than a conference. Plans are still in the tentative stages and are subject to change. But I'm too excited not to share the tete-a-tete Colleen and I penned this evening.
Anyone interested in attending this 4Real Weekend here in Louisiana can PM Colleen for details and directions.

Sounds sensationally Southern, Cay! Wish I could go but the funny thing is that MaryM and I were just talking about a 4realWest!
Hope y'all have fun broadening the community and really making 4real come alive -- whether you're in NoVa or LA!

Oh it sounds like so much fun! And it's on my birthday too. *grinz* Would this take the place of the campout? I don't want to ask my husband to drive that many hours twice. Oh I'll have to ponder on which to attend!

This sounds so fabulous! We had such a great time getting the 4 Reallers together at our regular homeschool conference here in the Rocky Mountains. I think regional gatherings are a great alternative for those who can't go great distances for one bigger event.

Now, Alice, you know Cajuns have no problem cooking anything up. Our problem is knowing when to STOP!
Seriously, Colleen (ie: missionfamily) is the mastermind here. She is a woman on a mission...literally.

Okay, I've been trying to get to a homeschool convention all year. I have that date open (told dh not to plan any scout event). I was hoping to go to Virginia, but South sure is a lot closer. Decisions, decisions ...

Dh is laughing here too...I wish you all could have seen his face when I came home from Wal-Mart last night and announced that I "accidentally" planned a homeschooling conference! While I admit to being the mastermind...it's only because I cannot bear the thought of Cay being so close to us and us not taking advantage of her talents...plus we've been 4real friends for so long now, I think it's about time we become friends for real! And Alice C., you know I'm totally lost if I'm not masterminding something! Seriously though, this is going to be a fun, very casual learning environment, with time for CM style family fun and time for moms to "pick each other's brains"....just don't take too much of mine, I'm not sure there's enoguh to go around as it is! Okay...I'm really not using my time wisely at this point...gotta go!

What a great idea! LA is too far for us, but maybe a mini-conference in Northern Oklahoma-Southern Kansas?? I am very new to 4Real Learning, but I like to organize events. Anyone in interested in gathering in northern Oklahoma on August 11th? Carole from the Heartland??
If this should be another thread, please feel free to move it.

Just in case you didn't see my post on the Ark-LA-Tex thread, I won't be able to attend the mini conference, I would be in the Dominican Republic until the end of August. Have fun!!

I would love to come but don't think we could swing it. I will check to see how far it is from us. We are 3 hours east of Houston. But that is the weekend before back to school for dh and us probably. It sounds so wonderful.

Here are some links to two nearby State Parks for those of you who have asked about camping...there are also many families who have offered to let people stay with them, so pm me if you need a place to stay.

Colleen and I got to "meet" each other yesterday over lunch at Bennigan's. She and her husband were driving through my area with their boys and it was a great chance to meet in person after...we roughly figured...8 years of knowing each other on the Internet.
There are ladies coming to the mini-conference from the New Orleans area and the Lafayette area so our intimate plans for a quaint proper English tea party might turn into a huge, joyful Cajun fais-do-do.
But, do not fear! Colleen is so up to the task. Laid-back-me could only admire her energy and motivation.
There will be a registration form shortly if anyone needs one.
And we think there will be plenty of tea cups while we enjoy Alice C's talk.
I, for one, can't wait!!!
Dawn, did you ever get that travel money?
Suz, how I would LOVE to get to see you again.
KC, I'd personally love to make the trip to Virginia next year with my history buff, but Colleen and the other ladies in back of this might be willing to make it an annual event. At least a bi-annual event.
Natalia, this is getting ridiculous that we haven't gotten together yet. My parents have a camp now further north Louisiana. We'll have to plan a tete-a-tete.
Lisa, I do hope you can make it. It'd be a great mini-retreat before school starts and we'd LOVE to have you there.
Carole, have you made your decision? Sure hope you get to come.
Just, anyone planning to attend, bring the bug spray for Friday night.

Wanted to mention, Colleen and I decided to do the Catholic Mosaic book "Juanita and Our Lady of the Angels".
I know this book is hard to find and some children have not heard it. And Colleen has been to Costa Rica on a mission trip so she'll be able to share some information and knowledge that I am not parley too.
And she's going to teach the children a little Spanish song she knows.
This is a very family-friendly retreat, so don't hesitate to PM Colleen if you're interested in coming.
