Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hey folks! After reading Growing Up Denatured in last week's NY Times (thanks to Kathleen, my personal article forwarder!), I bought the book recommended by the author, Richard Louv's Last Child in the Woods. Would anyone be interested in a studied reading of this book? It seems like a good launching point for ideas on how to make nature study work for kids today.

I'd love it! I'm very interested in this topic right now. My dd spent 3 hours outside by herself Monday making things out of leaves, berries and nuts. She had such a good time!

I am interested.
Brigid likes being outside. A few weeks ago she and her friend were building a fort in the woods. (She lost her building ferver after stepping on a nail) She also wants to set up a campsite in the orchard, at the far side where she won't see the house-- far enough for adventure but close enough to carry water.
When would this study begin?
Viv

Count me in. I'm certainly glad my kids spent the entire day outdoors!

MacBeth,
The book Last Child in the Woods looks really interesting. I'm in. I think a book on children and nature would be a good read.

Amazon says it will not come in until June. They usually overestimate so we shall see.

Maybe we can start mid June. I just realized that the official publish date is May 20th. I have an advance copy (with the most amusing typos ).

I did the One Click Buy on Amazon early this morning and I just got the confirm that it shipped so maybe they are over estimating.

I just got a notice from the San Diego Natural History Museum that Richard Louv will give a lecture and sign books on May 25. I'll try to go! Maybe he'll be doing the same in other cities.

I just ordered the book on Amazon and noticed the ship date as tomorrow, May 9th. If it really does get here in a timely fashion, count me in, too.

Great! How about everyone checking in when you get the book, and I'll start posting study questions? I have some ready to go (reading ahead; the book is very thought provoking).

Mine arrived today as well. I read the first chapter outdoors while the children climbed our big tree, chased bunnies, and planned the construction of a "bird blind," so I was feeling pretty good about their ability to connect to nature. : )

MacBeth -- Just saw this book study suggestion. I'm ordering the book now and would love to start with y'all.

thanks -- my dh and I have been fighting the battle of getting the kids out into nature (and we live under an hou from the gorgeous Blue Ridge -- you'd think we were making them walk across broken glass when we ask if they want to go )

This book sounds great! Thanks for the heads up!
Blessings

OK, my copy arrived yesterday and I started it last night. Pretty thought-provoking (though it's preaching to the choir, in this group!).

So do we all have the book now? I'll start as soon as we are ready! (Chomping at the bit, here.)

I think Kelly's correct about us being the choir, but I think the rest of the board is the congregation! Let's talk through thte book for them as well as ourselves.
