Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Have you seen her new one? Too Many Turkeys - It's cute, especially the illustrations, though I don't like it nearly as well as Too Many Pumpkins. Sometimes an author tries too hard to follow the pattern and it just can't be the same (think "If you give a mouse"...books).

I haven't seen it. I agree on trying to duplicate a success. While I like the first book by Numeroff, I don't like the rest, first because the duplication gets tired, plus my sons and I don't really enjoy reading books about chaos and messes. It seems to bother us a bit.

Another author that tried to duplicate was the Caps for Sale and Circus Caps for Sale. Just not the same zip.

Yesterday we read:

Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert

The North Wind and the Sun by La Fontaine, illustrated by Brian Wildsmith

The Adventures of Granny Clearwater and Little Critter by Kimberly Willis Holt

Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain by Edward Ardizzone.

I saw some of Ardizzone’s books newly reprinted in a bookshop at the beach, so I decided to check him out. I have always enjoyed his illustrations in other books, like by Eleanor Estes. I think he’s a winner with us – very captivating stories.

I am seeing this late, but am so glad I am seeing it I could have written Erin's first post word for word. I check out great picture books from the library every couple of weeks and we have some really great picture books that we own and I can't seem to fit them into our day I am going to take this challenge starting today. I am going to do this! Thanks for this thread

I forgot to give my rave reviews of this book. It's in Tall-Tale style, but very pro-family, especially respect for Grandmother and her wisdom to pass on knowledge and ability, and she learned her experience from previous family members.

Books we read yesterday:
Tim and Lucy Go to Sea
Tim and Charlotte
both by Edward Ardizzone.
These are a big hit with the boys...they are captivated by the adventure stories. Sadly, I think we tapped out our library's holdings for this series.

A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni

Merle the High Flying Squirrel by Bill Peet

Today we read:

The Quilt by Ann Jonas. The little loved this--in fact Luke took it to bed and now wants a quilt made out of his old clothes, just like the little girl in the book.

Saying Grace: A Prayer of Thanksgiving by Virginia Kroll.
Beautiful book in which Grace learns the importance of thanking God bot His bounty.

Thanksgiving is Here!! by Diane Goode. Everyone comes to Grandma and Grandpa's house for a traditional Thanksgiving...the kids love the illustrations.

I think I going to start posting our picture books on my blog every few days---it would be a great resource for the future.

Today we read for our Civil War Unit:

Young Abe Lincoln:The Frontier Days, 1809-1837 by Cherly Harness.
This covers Abe Lincoln's life from birth until he becomes a lawyer and heads to Springfield Il.

Abe Lincoln Goes to Washington: 1837-1865 by Cheryl Harness.
This covers Lincoln's life from when he first moves to Springfield Il., through the Civil War and until his assasination. My ds10 especially loved the very detailed maps thoughout both of these books.

Picture books with the littles:
Three Pebbles and a Song by Eileen Spinelli
"A delightful tale about self-expression and how individuals can contribute to their family's well-being in different but equally important ways. Moses, a young mouse, fails miserably at collecting the tangible things that are necessary for winter survival. He much prefers twirling and skittering like the fallen leaves, humming and whistling like the wind through the corn stalks, and tossing and catching tiny rocks." I love this illustrations in this very cute book.

The Thanksgiving Door by Debby Atwell.
"After burning the Thanksgiving dinner, an elderly couple goes down the street to a restaurant. They wander in through the open door of the New World Caf‚, but the proprietor's family thinks that having customers will ruin their private party. Grandmother chastises them and so the "guests" are given the seats of honor"

Tops and Bottoms by Lesley Conger
A few weeks ago we read a more modern version of this book with a bear as the main character. This version has a goblin in it. Both books are great, and my ds5 especially loved when the farmer "gets the better" of the goblin at the end of this fun book.

So I am back from a marvelous trip to see my Dad in St. Augustine and we spent the whole week at the library so I can't even begin to list the ton of picture books we read while there

Now that we are back, back to posting our picture book adventures:

Today's dose:

The ABC Bunny by Wanda Gag (BFIAR)

The Greatest Treasure by Demi

How to Babysit an Orangatan by Tara Darling (A bit environmentalist for my taste)

Ducks don't get wet by Augusta Goldin and Helen K. Davie

We are finishing our China unit and moving on to Japan and Isreal!!!

Actually again a collection of a few over the past week. Have been picking up new books. I've been reviewing new publications. The first two just came out the other from earlier this year.

Ten Big Toes and a Prince's Nose - Cute "fairy tale" princess/prince story with a twist. Not your typical beautiful princess and handsome prince but rather a story of seeing beyond the physical to the real person inside.

The 3 Little Dassies - The laatest book from Jan Brett. It's an adapted version of the "3 little pigs" but featuring an African rodent called a dassie and it's nemesis the eagle. LOVED IT...clever revamping of the story and of course it has the beautiful Jan Brett illustrations which I especially loved for the sidebar pictures featuring gorgeous examples of African cloth patterns. It's a great way to learn about some some flora and fauna of Namibia Africa.

Insect Detective - Picture book which is very nature study journal-ish with lovely pen and watercolor illustrations. Covers a variety of insects and other crawlies including wasps, ants, bees, Herald moth, leaf-miner caterpillar, earwig, ground beetle, dragonfly. Encourages "exploring" and "observing" nature around you to be an insect detective. Thumbs up.

Today for fun reading time we read:
I Know an Old Lady to Swallow a Pie This is so cute, based on the rhyme, "I know an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly", my kids all loved it. It is so fun to watch the "old lady" eat everything which is supposed to be for Thanksgiving dinner.

For history and Thanksgiving:
"Tapenum's Day "By following a boy through his day, readers learn how the Wampanoag Indians lived in the 1600s. Their homes, clothing, food, and weapons are shown and explained in the course of the story" Amazon

Mary's First Thanksgiving "This insipid story of a newly immigrated 19th-century Irish family whose daughter feels the pain of separation from her homeland reiterates the origins of Thanksgiving. Mary's father introduces the story of the five kernels of corn, which is used to remind people of sacrifices made by the first colonists during "the starving time." Amazon
