Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, with summer nearly here and the fact that we are moving to be about 10 minutes from the Eastern seashore and are going to spend our two week vacation on Puget Sound, we are starting a seashore studies unit. So far we've got:

The Burgess Seashore Book for Children
One Small Square: Seashore
A Journey into the Ocean

I'd love any other suggestions for books, activities, etc. to use for this unit. TIA!

Here are my favorites:

Homeschool Share Ocean resources

(there are unit studies based on ocean themed books, printables, and animal studies of animals in the ocean.)

THere are a few FIAR titles that I love to read when we are studying the beach:

Arabella
Gramma's Walk
Night of the Moonjellies

Jim Arnosky books I love:

Beachcombing: Exploring the Seashore

Field Trips: Bug Hunting, Animal Tracking, Bird-watching, Shore Walking

Watching Water Birds

We picked up Seashells in My Pocket, 3rd: AMC's Family Guide to Exploring the Coast from Maine to Florida that has been very useful.

But the favorite thing for all the boys was to get a pocket guide to seashells (if you find the one for the specific coast or beach, even better). The color pictures were great for them to just take all their shells and try and identify them from the pictures in the book.

We live on the beach and have read many books about the ocean but by far the one that stands out the most in my children's memories is Pagoo!Pagoo by Holling C Holling

Sunny, thanks for reminding me about Pagoo! I have that book and will have to dig it out...we used it years ago and the kids loved it.
Jennifer, I'm wondering about the Seashells in My Pocket book. I couldn't look inside it at Amazon (as I could for the Arnosky books), and I'm wondering is it like a field guide, or a story, or what? Would it be good as a supplement to regular field guides, or would the field guides alone be enough? Thanks for the recommendations, and I hope I'm not imposing too much here with all my questions!

Also, as we look at the ocean and ponder it's magnitude, we often refer to the Chinese brother who swallowed the ocean! 5 Chinese Brothers

It's written for children, ages 6 and up. It's in b&w (I have the 2nd edition) with chapters on Exploring the Seashore, Sea Creatrue, Shells to Collect, Seashore Plants, Insects, Shorebirds. I guess it's like a field guide, but very simple and quick information, sketches of each item, but a wide variety of categories, so if you didn't want to buy a field guide for every category....I think the kids would gravitate to a color field guide, but this is a good starter, especially since it fits the Atlantic coast. I unfortunately only had a shell guide that covered the world, and it was hard to match our shells. The Seashells In My Pocket gives more of an idea of what you'll see, instead of trying to figure out what is it that I'm seeing, if that makes any sense.

Sorry I'm rushing off to finish packing and go to bed.

I just wrote a little blog post on a seashell craft that I did when I was 8! The box has survived several moves in the past 33 years! Ahem!

Enjoy!
