Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

x-posted on Living Literature:

We just started reading My Side of the Mountain and as we're reading, I realized just how much nature and living with nature information there is ... and we just finished Miracles on Maple Hill and Rascal and thought just how much "nature study" my kids are learning just from our read-alouds.

Can anyone suggest others that are great stories but also give so much nature information ... species and how to survive in nature, ways to live in and with nature, etc.

Call of the Wild
Little House books

I know there are a bunch more but I am drawing a blank right now. I'll come back when I have full brain function.

Hi Mary,
We enjoyed Owl in the Shower, same author as My Side of the Mountain, Jean Craighead George. I have a little owl study on my blog we did with the book, check the sidebar for the link. This coming school year 2009-10 I'm using this book, for the basis of our nature journal lessons Keeping a Nature Journal

These are great ladies! Thanks! I'm keeping a running list and will post when the ideas slow a bit ... I've also remembered, Yearling, Owls in the Family, Never Cry Wolf and How the Red Fern Grows ....

Many of these are "survival in the nature" type books; but a couple are kids loving wild animals and taking care of them (and the additional benefit of what they eat, their habitats, etc). Anyone have any suggestions for the second type (over the survivalist type)?

Anything by Thorton Burgess, although these are a little younger than some of the books posted. But I love the Thorton Burgess books.

Resurrecting this thread to ask whether anyone thought of Robert Lawson's Rabbit Hill or The Tough Winter (appears to be out of print).

And then there's And Now, Miguel, which offers a lot about sheep.

Tina. Thanks so much for mentioning these two ... we read Cabin on Trouble Creek last year for history (excellent!) but hadn't heard about And Now, Miguel ... with sheep, it's got to be good! THANKS! We're reading Tom Sawyer right now but will have this waiting in the wings.

Sign of the Beaver is one that we've recently enjoyed and we borrowed a movie from Netflix called Keeping the Promise that was based on the book.

Bumping this up- we just listened to Rabbit Hill on tape.
Such a sweet story- my dc loved it- but the surprise bonus was the whole
St. Francis theme that comes to light at the end of the book.
For me, that made the book!

My Side of the Mountain is a trilogy.      My son read all three of them last year and loved them.
