In this thread, Jennifer mentions sangria, which sounds so refreshing for a summer evening or party. I don't know how to make it, but I'd love to learn!

It got me to thinking about favorite summer drinks - alcoholic and non-alcoholic. I could use some good recipes as we are hosting a few parties this summer - inlcuding dh's 40th!

So what are your favorite hot-weather drinks? Please include recipes if you have them!

Summer sangria, from my next door neighbor (Peruvian):

1 bottle red wine
2 limes
2 Tbsp sugar
fresh fruit--oranges, banana slices, whatever.

And she continued: "It doesn't really matter what fruit you add, but a bit of brandy is nice, too."

Oh, and I'm with Theresa...Corona is always nice.

My kids love virgin margaritas (slushed Bacardi frozen mixer type) and virgin pina coladas (ditto), and Shirley Temples with lots of cherries.

A Sea breeze is nice for adults: Cranberry, grapefruit, and vodka.

Ohhh....late-evening nightcap on a hot evening...sip Sapphire gin on the rocks.

I love Cosmopolitans - very pretty in the glass.

2 tablespoons of Vodka
1½ tablespoons of Cointreau (Triple sec)
1½ tablespoons of Cranberry juice
2 teaspoons of freshly squeezed lime juice
crushed ice
twist of lime

Combine the Vodka, Cointreau, cranberry juice, lime juice and crushed ice in a cocktail shaker. Gently shake and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist of lime.

I told my friends after I have the babies forget the flowers bring me a Margarita! I think I will have earned the indulgence - before my milk comes in!

Or you could have them after your milk comes in and count on them sleeping a little longer than usual between feedings .

How about a Bellini Bar? Pretty for a brunch or summer bridal shower:


2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 (16-ounce) bag frozen peaches, thawed
1 teaspoon grated orange peel
1 (16-ounce) bag frozen strawberries, thawed
1 (16-ounce) bag frozen blueberries or blackberries, thawed
4 to 6 (750-ml) bottles Prosecco or other sparkling wine, chilled
Fresh strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, for garnish
Orange peel twists, for garnish

Stir the sugar and water in a large saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Cool completely.
Puree the peaches and orange peel in a blender with 1/2 cup of the sugar syrup until smooth. Strain through a fine-meshed strainer and into a bowl. Cover and refrigerate. In a clean blender puree the strawberries with 1/3 cup of the sugar syrup until smooth. Strain through a clean fine-meshed strainer and into another bowl. Discard the seeds. Puree the blueberries in a clean blender with 1/3 cup of the sugar syrup until smooth. Strain through a clean fine-meshed strainer and into a third bowl. Discard the seeds and solids. Pour each of the purees into clear glass bowls or small pitchers.

For each serving, pour 2 to 4 tablespoons of the desired fruit puree into a Champagne flute. Slowly pour enough Prosecco into the flute to fill. Gently stir to blend. Garnish with the whole berries, as desired, and serve.

Do-Ahead Tip: The fruit purees can each be made 1 day ahead. Cover separately and refrigerate.

Long Island Iced Tea is a wonderful (but POWERFUL) concoction. It tastes just like sweetened iced tea but beware. More than one and you are likely to be unhappy the next day.

It is practically a requirement to indulge in one here on Long Island at some point in the summer.


crushed ice
1 tablespoon of light rum (Bacardi)
1 tablespoon of vodka
1 tablespoon of gin
1 tablespoon of triple sec (Cointreau)
1 tablespoon of tequila
1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice
6 tablespoons / 90 ml of Cola
slice of lemon
sprig of fresh mint
Place the crushed ice in a long tall tumbler, add the rum, vodka, gin, triple sec, tequila and lemon juice. Stir to combine and top with cola. Garnish with a slice of lemon and a sprig of fresh mint.

MacBeth, I cannot stomach iced tea. Not even the smallest amount. And I love Long Island Iced Teas...probably because they do not taste like iced tea. But yes, more than one "tea" and it takes days for me to recover. There's a bar over near Notre Dame called "The Linebacker Inn" that house speciality is L.I. Iced Teas

Having a tendency for low blood sugar mixed drinks that have fruit and sugar AND alcohol are serious problems! I've had to learn (the VERY hard way) to maks sure I eat protein with any kind of alcohol or I seriously regret it the next day. And to keep hydrated with H2O when drinking alcohol.

And...the old saying "Beer before liquor, never sicker. Liquor before beer, never fear" I learned its truth the hard way.

It's not a mixed drink, but I just love dry white wine or sparkling white wines ice cold in summer. It's so refreshing.

Now my mother had this wonderful Chatham Artillery Punch (sp) she served at my sister's wedding...I'll have to get the recipe. Takes some "brewing" before serving.

I'm back from the store bearing all my St. Anthony goodies including Sangria Stuff! Tonight we're having Red Sangria, one of my favorites.

So to a bottle of fruity red wine I'm going to add
Cherries tonight (they looked excellent at the store)
Grapefruit and Key lime slices (because I had them)
Granny Smith apple wedges (sliced very thin)
I'll splash a bit of Triple Sec in and about a cup of orange juice too.

Mariannna's fruit will all go into cranberry juice with a bit of orange juice too.
