My family is preparing for a staycation August 3-6. Half the fun is brainstorming ideas. So far we will spend 2 days and 1 night at a local resort/waterpark and we will go to 2 Dback games . We plan to go so some museums as well. Now I'm looking for ideas that will help at home. Any ideas on:

Turning our home/yard/pool into a resort, or at least give it a vacation feel? (I'm thinking about *It's a Wonderful Life* honeymoon scene.)

Keeping the house running without resort housekeeping and family chores?

Making fun meals, mostly ahead of time?

*Little fun activities* like smores on the grill, late night movies, etc.

I'll keep you posted and TIA!

Love,

I am so not creative, but...wow...what a neat idea.

Great idea, Angie! I'd love to hear more of what you do, and how you handle housekeeping/meals while at home! (That's my #1 reason I love staying at hotels/cruising -- someone else to clean the toilet and prepare the meals! LOL)

Curious, what resort are you staying at? We stayed at the Point South Mtn a few years ago, but they've changed hands and don't have the awesome deal we got back then.

HAVE FUN!!!!

May I direct you to my friend Toni's blog? Her family did a big weekend-o-fun with cousins. I was very impressed by all the games they created! Here is the link to her post on their activities.

festive drinks with fruit on the rim and umbrellas.. I like fruit juice mixed with a lemon lime soda.. it's got a summer resort type feel to it.. and you can use about any combo.. one of my favorites is pineapple juice, lemon lime soda and enough grenedine to turn it peachy colored. but there's lots of juices that would go well mixed with soda.. cranberry.. any of the mixed citrus juices etc.. generally apple and grape don't go real well though a strong purple grape juice is ok.. I'd look for the stronger flavored juices for this.. Oh and any blended drinks you can think of that you can make without alcohol.. strawberry "daquiri's", pina coladas, sangria (cranberry juice and orange juice.. lighten it up with some lemon-lime soda)

music that makes you feel holidayish.. maybe some calypso or hawaiian style music? oh!! or maybe one of those sound machine types of things.. you could get ocean waves in the background while you're at your pool.

!!

I'll have to ask Dave, Melanie. I'm thinking that it is Point South...and no, we didn't get the type of deal that we got a few years ago either...but still pretty good considering.

Oh, Nancy, my boys would LOVE the dunk machine. If your friend links directions on how to make that, let me know. Thanks for sharing.

I love festive drinks, Jodie! Thanks for the specific suggestions. For Sunday night we'll be at the resort. Monday night, we'll go to a Dback game and come home late...thinking of having a late night camp out theme that night. On Tuesday night, we'll have more time at home and I'm thinking about a luau theme.

Keep the suggestions coming, please! Campfire snacks?...Luau food...music...movies?...anything!

Thanks so much!

Love,

Outdoor movies? A couple of Navy families I know have those projection things (note my lack of technical knowledge...) and they hang a white sheet on a garage wall and show movies outdoors.

How about a scavenger hunt? I love the logic of trying to figure out how/what to get.

Thanks, Nancy! They do this at the Navy Lodge in San Diego in the summer. The movie choices are usually awful but there is something special about watching a movie on the big screen outdoors...like a drive in...which reminded me that there IS a drive-in about 25 minutes from here. Currently WALL-E is playing...that might work!

Great idea, Betsy! Maybe we'll do an easy scaveger hunt on Monday night and a treasure hunt on Tuesday (to go with our luau/ocean/pirate theme. Here's a cute treasure map idea.

Please keep the ideas coming!

Love,

Just wanted to let you know that our staycation was a wonderful success! I don't have many words of wisdom but do encourage you to give it a try.

One of the perks of the staycation was seeing us be in our home in a different way...a more relaxed and attentive way. We rearranged furniture and decorated to give it a different feel. We didn't use the computer or phone. The pace was leisurely. Although we didn't "do chores", whatever was pressing got done (much to my surprise.) No, I didn't do laundry and just powered through it when the staycation was over. We kept food very simple and ate out a few times - a real treat for us. I had grand visions of making a wonderful Hawaiian meal for our luau, then my dh suggested we order *you bake Hawaiian pizza*...that'll work!

We now plan to have a staycation once a year!

We purchased these hurricane glasses and they were a hit with tiny matching umbrellas and some other stuff at Oriental Trading Company. We now also plan on having a luau party each year with our new, cheap, tacky, stuff .

So it was fun and refreshing and yes, we spent some money, but it was within our budget and cost less than a trip away.

Good luck with your staycations and please do share you success stories!

Love,

I saw last night that there is going to be a national stay-at-home week but I didn't catch the date.

Does anyone know about this?

Thanks for starting this thread, Angie. I will definitely be coming back to explore it.
