Well we just found out we are expecting number six and in my search for morning sickness 'helps' I could totally empathize with Sarah. I want to be excited but the mere thought of enduring morning sickness for the next 12 to 16 weeks is paralyzing the joy of being pregnant. I don't get post-pardon depression I get first trimester depression and if this little blessing is a girl my cross will be much harder to bear I am not comfortable with taking prescription drugs and wonder if anyone has any good home remedies that have worked for them?

I also need some ideas on how to wean my 13 month old from nursing? I practice attached parenting and he is an active nurser (especially at night) but I also know myself well enough that in a couple weeks the hormones and feelings will be so intense that nursing is not an option. Can anyone offer suggestions that have worked for them? Are there any good books on weaning in a gentle but effective manner?

As far as weaning goes, I increase the amount of food and liquid I am giving my little one, especially before bed. Contrary to what most people do, I wean the child from all daytime nursing first. Then I work on nighttime. I have been known to give some of my more persistent nursers strawberry milk in the middle of the night.    Give your little one a lot of love and extra attention and take it slowly. Finally, we invested in small glasses for our little ones to drink from during the day (under supervision). Liquids taste much better in glass or mugs than they do in plastic, especially water.

IV fluids and eating constantly are the only thing keeping me from loosing my mind.

I am nursing a 15mo old who wakes all night long. He nurses like a newborn lately, but all mine did when I was going through this. I think they know I'm unhappy and since I'm always lying down, they figure its always a good time to nurse.

Last night dh at 3:45am got up to walk him since I was just "nursed out." It was his 4th time waking and he just wants to nurse and nurse and nurse. The night nursing especially feels irritating, so it will be the first one to go.

I don't really have a plan.

I just wanted to tell you you're not alone. I am struggling so much here. This is a difficult time for our family.

Congratulations, Leslie!! I'm so happy for you!!   

I don't have any morning sickness remedies as so far I haven't had huge problems with that, thank God. I know what you mean about the thought of being sick dampening the joy a bit - I get mild all-day nausea and unbelievable exhaustion - I have no idea how I'll handle feeling like that *and* school if God blesses us with more! I did nurse through all my pregnancies (not the first, of course, ;-), though, and can offer a bit of advice there.

No matter what, be sure to take it slowly. As we all know, the first trimester is an uncertain time, and I have heard stories of moms who wean immediately when they find out they're pregnant, only to have the worst happen and they find themselves even more sad that they could no longer nurse their other baby. IME, weaning happens naturally over the first trimester. As you get farther along, your milk supply will most likely naturally diminish and apparently the taste changes so that most kids no longer like the "mamamilk" that much. 2 of my 3 kids weaned at about 3 months along, and my other one *drastically* decreased his nursing about that time. The only thing I really did was institute a "don't offer, don't refuse, and gently discourage" policy when I got those nursing and pregnant heebie-jeebies. I think God designed us so perfectly, and gives us lots of signs and symptoms for when and how to wean the older sibling.

It also helps to give the weaning child LOTS of other attention, lots of physical affection, too. That helps them not want to nurse for comfort quite so much, I think.   

Congratulations, again. I hope and pray I'm not too far behind you! :-)

Well, as far as "natural remedies" -- I honestly didn't have much luck at all. I tried:

*Acupressure bands
*ReliefBand (similar to the acuprassure bands, but it emitted an eletrical pulse. Was $70. )
*Ginger Lollipops ( mildly, slightly helpful.)
*MorningWell Audio CD ("audio program that has been created from a unique blend of music, specific frequencies and pulses to cure the symptoms of morning sickness.")

The only thing that kinda, maybe, mighta helped a teeny bit was the Ginger lollipops. The rest just was a waste of money for us. However, I have SEVERE "morning" sickness, so one of the other rememdies may work if it isn't as bad as what I had. I needed the medication just to stay hydrated.

Oh, I think aromatherepy recommends the aroma of a cut lemon?

I don't know if you class this as natural - but eating ginger biscuits really helped me. Something in that ginger and carbs. And small food frequently.

I get hyperemesis too. The worst was this last time when my dh deployed for 3 months about a week after it started. We had just moved to the UK and knew nobody. I was so scared but the Lord faithfully provided. It was also a great opportunity to share with others as to why we don't contracept.

I have found that none of the prescription drugs work except zofran (very expensive!) which I know you said you don't want to take drugs. Even with the zofran I still ended up severely dehydrated in the ER with an IV.

In my experience eating helps, but not always and never as much as I would like it to (and only if I can keep it down). Ginger actually makes me feel worse and the Relief Band was a waste of $. The acupressure bands did nothing except make little indentations in my wrist and the vitamin B6 supplement was useless too. Sometimes I craved citrus. With my 1st I would regularly cut open a lemon and devour it while keeping a straight face much to my dh's amazement. Often the only fluids I could keep down were decaf frappaccinos from Starbucks.


Marilyn Shannon has a booklet published through the CCL titled Managing Morning Sickness which helped a bit. I also have a book called No More Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women by Miriam Erick, R.D., M.S. I just got it before this last pregnancy but didn't use it since my dh wasn't here to help me implement any suggestions. I think it's out of print, but I found it through a seller on Amazon.

What actually helped the most was to lie really still and listen to classical music. Sometimes answering the cordless phone lying next to me was enough movement to make me throw up. When I finally let go and realized that I would be losing my stomach several times a day it was easier. No more painfully trying to keep it down so to speak. It provided for a wonderful opportunity (note I only say this in hindsight and never when I'm in the middle of it) to offer up my sufferings for the salvation of the little one (or ones as was the case in my last pregnancy) growing inside me. I also tried to make a daily offering for the babies whose mom's are considering abortion.

I will keep you in my prayers. It is certainly a very difficult time. I imagine I will be there soon too. Just keep thinking about the perfect little baby fingers and toes that are the fruit of your labors.

Eliminating sugar and increasing the protein really helped me make through the first trimester of my last three pregnancies.

I have loved everything I've gotten from Earth Mama, Angel Baby for postpartum.I didn't order anything early in my pregnancy, though I think I would if I ever am so blessed again.
You might try Morning Wellness Tea and/or the this CD.

Thanks Cay I will definitely need the prayers as I am only 6-7 weeks and already the smells, aversions and nausea are starting which just triggers all those other depressive feelings...

I'm trying to set up some sort of calling / visiting support system now, before I get to depressed to reach out, to help me get through this first trimester. Unfortunately the worst of it should be hitting right around Christmas and New Years .

I do not have any family close and I don't bother to mention the new blessings until after the morning sickness subsides since they are not very supportive (all non-Catholic). At least when I feel better I can handle the less than pleasant comments better.

I'm 9 weeks now and my house has completely fallen apart. It is so depressing.

I want to start digging myself out now, but when I get off the couch I just don't have the strength to endure anything .

Every day we are deeper and deeper in chaos. I did have a girl come and there are more girls coming to help. but I really need a live-in helper .

I must say though, the community of hs'ers here have rallied for me and are constantly bringing meals. I can never thank them enough.

My house is the local "Little Flowers" group service project for December . All they'll need is "Haz Mat" gear, a St. Bernard, a backhoe and they're ready to tackle this disaster. It will be very humbling.

Will I ever dig myself out?
