Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone used a really good study or literature guide for Lord of the Rings they can recommend?

I found this it is quite expensive and would not want to buy it unless it came highly recommended - has anyone used this?

Also, I would love to know if there were any specifically Catholic study units, especially considering it's rich Catholic analogies etc.

Thank you and God Bless, Anne

This thread mentions that study and links to another comment and a newsletter.

This article is interesting. (I haven't read it completely yet.) Not quite a unit study, but maybe a start.

Janette, thank you so much for the link, I did a search and couldn't find anything - I am glad there is something here already for me to read and follow it's links.

Thanks for the article too - it looks great at first glance and there is no reason why I can't build a small unit study myself from this sort of information, I do have Santifying Myth which goes in depth in the Catholic roots and analogies in LOTR and so this is the sort of unit study that would appeal to me greatly.

Janette thank you again for your link, I found this amongst it:

"There are sacraments not symbols. For their journey, Galadriel graciously bestows upon the Fellowship — a representation of the church — seven mystical gifts; no mere symbols these, but glimmering reflections of the Church's seven sacraments — the conveying of spiritual grace through temporal rites. And at her Mirror, Galadriel derides the Reformers' taunt of Eucharistic magic in the Mass when she says: "For this is what your folk would call magic, I believe; though I do not understand clearly what they mean; and they seem to use the same words for the deceits of the enemy." (353)"

I am reading this out loud at present and this sentence did not escape us, we discussed the profound, spiritual truth in this! In fact my mum was in the car with us as we read it and had been only saying to me how she did not like the sounds of LOTR (mentioning of spells, wizards, magic etc.) and I had been trying to explain to her what this quote did..but much, much better! I think she understood after the discussion of the quote above.

That quote jumped out at me too! We have read LOTR as a family several times and have commented as we go on the Catholic elements, but this was always unguided. That article is inspiring me to go back and research the Catholic aspect with the family. And thank you for the link to Sanctifying Myth. We have not read it.

Hurray! My library just got Sanctifying Myth in! I'm quite excited, it looks to be most helpful.
