When your prayer routine seems dull and listless, what do you do to jumpstart it or what are the prayers that you just can't make it through your day without saying??? Also do you find that prayerful music is a good form of prayer for you?
Thanks for any responses

Meredith,
This is where attending a retreat on forms of Ignatian prayer was so helpful to me. Our prayer routine does not have to center only around rote prayers, novenas, rosary, devotionals. To "ignite" prayers means to make it something you live and breathe throughout the day.
Take a walk and observe nature.
Little acts of service to each other.
Any spiritual reading you do counts as prayer time, including reading and discussing the Mosaic books to your children.
Jounaling/Blogging about something spiritual can serve as prayer time.
I also love to read spiritual quotes by the saints. Something thought provoking. Take a quote in the morning that speaks to you and meditate on it all day. That's prayer.
Did you make Alice's ice cream spoon craft while discussing the various saints?
Prayerful music as a form of prayer? Definitely!
To "beef" up that time for the children we can go to a church prayer garden and recite the Stations. We can visit the cemetery.
Some other Ignatian forms of prayer are:
Exclamations of Praise
Centering Prayer
Scripture Imaginative Visualization (placing ourselves inside a Biblical scene)
Review your life and journaling
Poetry
Lectio Divina (divine reading)
Examen (examination of conscience)
As long as the act (no matter how little it is) is done with great love and offered up...it is a prayer.

Wonderful suggestions, Cay.
Meredith, I wish I was headed out for a nature walk right now. The weather is so depressing lately.
Does "Rain, rain, go away.." count as a prayer? LOL!

I read one of Henri Nouwen's books. There are two in particular that I LOVE "The Only Necessary Thing: Living a Prayerful Life" and "With Burning Hearts"
Nouwen is not always an easy read, but these two books really are.
This summer I read John Michael Talbot's The "Lessons of Saint Francis: How to Bring Simplicity and Spirituality to Your Daily Life" it is wonderful and also a very quick and easy read.
Getting someone else's perspective is always helpful to me when I am feeling a bit dry.

I am currently reading Weigel's Letters to A Young Catholic which is very invigorating
My favourite form of prayer though, is to pray without ceasing... I heard the song on an Orthodox Podcast, but the prayer is wonderful just to dedicate the work you do at home to God... as part of your vocation as a mother and wife... it is from the writings of St. John Chrysostom
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, Have mery on us
I LOVE the Lingua Angelica music CD BTW, from Memoria Press

This is what Exclamations of Praise is.
And it was the members of this board who reminded me awhile back to use this form of prayer during a difficult time by praying "I trust in Thee!" whenever I felt worried or doubtful.
Such a simple form of prayer but, when done with faith, it's huge.

When I read your post Meredith, I thought of the words of St. Peter Julian Eymard. I took his words and then jotted down some ideas on how to rekindle the prayer life.
Worn-Out Piety
Music is a personal choice. I do like music that allows me to think and to pray. Most of the time with the music of Bach, I can move from thoughts of how lovely is the day ... to homeschooling questions ... to Hail Marys fluidly. I can't say I choose to listen to much else. Every once in a while, I like the music of the Franciscans of the Immaculate. I think you can pray and listen to music at the same time. It depends on the music.

I LOVE this Helen, thank you so much, it's JUST what I needed to hear and read!!! You are an angel! I love Bach too, and find much joy in listening to his works, plus ds 8 plays many of his Minuets, a bonus!! Thank you again so much. I will heed your words of others and take them to heart!!

Dear Meredith, I am glad the post was helpful!
Rachel,
Here's a link to the
Enchiridion of Indulgences
(Adobe file)
where the indulgenced pious practices of the Church are listed. On page 41 you'll find a list of pious invocations. This is the 1968 up to date version. (At least, I think it is up to date.)
I think of this book as helping me to understand what the Church deems an important and therefore indulgenced prayer. It is not a long book.

Meredith,
I just started "Life of Christ" by Fulton Sheen. It is a breathtaking book. I read only short passages and come away very much in love, filled with wonder and awe and peace.
I found the book for I think 10 cents maybe 25 at a used booksale this summer. It really should have been priceless. So beautiful!
Just thought I would through this out there in case you ever get a chance to pick up a copy.
God bless,
Marybeth

I read a book.
(For me, whenever I feel down or need inspiration in any area - the answer is read a book! ).
Right now, I am reading St Francis of Assisi by G. K. Chesterton.
I am inspired by the joy and humility of St. Francis and this inspiration is helping my prayer time, at home and in church.
