My oldest dd is my 5th. With her 4 older brothers we did awesome with Duke TIP's The Once and Future King, Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings, Ancient Greek from Kolbe. Quite the grand, daring, heroic adventure through literature.

My dd tho is not interested in that and so I need to plan for her. She is going to be a 6th grader.

I'd like to do Green Gables, Secret Garden, and maybe Little Women and I don't know what all else. She likes the boy stuff too, but I'd like to have some mom and daughter bonding going here, kwim?

Suggestions?

You might like Little Men and Jo's Boys more than Little Women.. at least, there's more interaction between younger boys and girls in those which is fun.

The Betsy-Tacy books (Betsy-Tacy Go Over the Big Hill and Betsy-Tacy Go Downtown) are great for this age!

And for mother-daughter bonding, Ma Ingalls is the best! All the Laura Ingalls Wilder books (and related series) offer wonderful examples of family life.

While there's not much mother-daughter stuff in the first book, I highly recommend The Penderwicks and the rest of that series, too. Modern-day, true to life, gentle, humorous and rich in family/sibling interaction and love. This series was a hit with my dd, who prefers humor to relationships when it comes to reading. (Relationships are there, don't worry!)

I miss the read-aloud days...wish I could be a fly on the wall in your reading corner!

I thought the Literature for Young Ladies curriculum was just LOVELY when Jen Mack put it together that first year. It made me want to have a girl in the worst way Some of it is still there, but you might also look at Jen's blog and her plans for her oldest daughter. She's a little older than yours, but a lot of the Naturalist stuff she studies and Jen shares with Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady and the bunny trails from there seem such a perfect fit alongside Anne, Jo, and the girls

I was going to suggest the Literature for Young Ladies.
It would be my favourite Curriculum.
We have tailored it for ourselves and added books as we need to.
I would definitely look at it. I have it bookmarked.

I may hold off another year until my 11 yr old isn't struggling with reading quite so much (she'd made a huge improvmeent this year) and that will put both her and the 10 yr old in the right age range for these.. oh.. I can't wait.

How wonderful if sharing these plans was helpful! You know, in retrospect, it would have been really neat to cover all 8 of the Anne books one year, and the Betsy Tacy series the next, wouldn't it? Well....maybe for my next dd!!
