My ds-16 is taking Bravewriter's online essay class this summer. It's got me looking into other online class possibilities. Anybody have some suggestions? Could we make a list of online opportunities for our teens?

We used Write Guide last year for my 14 yo dd. It is an individualized online writing course and is geared for all ages not just teens. I plan to enroll both my 8 yo and my 12 yo this Fall.

Recently at the Phoenix homeschool convention I sat down with Alpha Omega Publications . This is a Christian company and I do not know if there is anti-Catholic material. Having the opportunity to click through their Switched-On Schoolhouse CD classes, my goodness I was impressed. You load the course on both your computer and the student's computer and you can plug in due dates for assignments, etc. Kyle will be doing their elective course on the US Constitution. They also offer an on-line private school, but I haven't looked into that. See the options at www.aop.com

Just a clarification to Victoria's post:
www.islas.org has two "branches" - Regina Coeli (Catholic) and Scholar's Online (abbreviated SOLA, Protestant). Both sets of classes are listed on each site, and we haven't found anything anti-Catholic in the classes my kids have taken. For those of you who missed my earlier posts on ISLAS, it's a fantastic "school." We've enjoyed the Latin, science, logic, Church History and Aquinas courses we've taken.

LPH Schoolis Catholic but mainly for elementary and possibly some middle school students. We're going to be taking Latin Prayers and a History of Science.

Yes. Michaella did the Creative Writing class several years ago and last year a couple of the kids did a Fractions class and my 7th gr. ds did the Science class.
You get the basics and you can add as many extras (reading, research, papers, etc.; the kids can turn in extra credit) as you want. The Science class alternated weeks with info and experiments and activities.
It's very inexpensive and I never had a problem with lessons coming late, etc. He will grade the tests if there are any and keep an average for the year. It has a community feel to it as there are message boards for the kids and "bonus questions." You can rack up points and get little prizes at the end of the semester.

What ages do the LPH classes address? I have a very active 10yods who would be interested in the Science Projects class, but is it TRULY for elementary students?
I'm looking for some self-directed activities, here

The classes are geared towards 4th gr. and up. I guess I should have said "upper elementary." The program is designed so you really don't have to be that involved unless you want to moniter the content and add assignments, extra reading, etc. The kids can email the teacher with questions and print out supply lists in advance. If you click on Science Projects you will see a list of all the topics covered. If your 10 yo is interested in it I'd say go for it. You get to cancel or renew before 2nd semester.

I just went to look at the Write Guide site you (and others) have mentioned. It looks pretty good. I take it you've had good experience with it? Anyone else? Anne Marie, I remember you mentioned you utilized this program, too. Any comments?
I noticed it has a "Catholic Option"...you can choose to have a Catholic writing instructor. Is this a Catholic-run company?

Our experience was pretty good. The feedback was good, and I learned a lot by seeing the suggestions made.
It is a Catholic-run company. The "Catholic Option" must be new, though - it wasn't around when we did it. We had a Catholic instructor, and he made some suggestions for further research into whichever saint my child was writing about!
We signed up several kids for the program, and they took turns working with the instructor. My biggest challenge was keeping the kids (and myself) on track so we got our money's worth from the program!

Thanks, Anne Marie. I'm pondering doing the WriteGuide thing in lieu of the Composition option with the lit class at RC. That would free us up to do a different lit class, one with Dr. M...unspellable last name... I'm just wondering if that would be biting off more than we could chew. I take it he (like his nice wife) is a fine, tho challenging, teacher!

I think it sounds like a good combination! Did you know that some of the composition options within ISLAS actually use WriteGuide? But I think if you use it, you are probably only signing up that particular student to use WriteGuide for that class, vs. being able to use it for more than one kid.
