I decided to start school early this year so that I can take time off when the baby is born. I also decided to spend 7 weeks on North America instead of the suggested 5 weeks, just b/c there were so many neat books I wanted us to read. Here is what I have planned for the North America section of CHC's Tour the Continents:

Preparation

1. Print outline map of North America

2. Print outline maps of US, Canada, and Mexico



Week 1

1. Begin reading Paddle-to-the-Sea. Read and narrate one chapter/day.

2. Read and narrate 2 folk tales from American Tall Tales.

3. Begin reading St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Read and narrate one chapter/day.

4. Bookworm reads The Rag Coat for Independent Reading. Begin making a nine-patch quilt square.

5. Label locations from read-alouds on maps.



Week 2

1. Continue reading and narrating Paddle-to-the-Sea.

2. Read and narrate 2 folk tales from American Tall Tales.

3. Continue reading and narrating St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

4. Mary Beth reads When I Was Young in the Mountains for Independent Reading.

5. Label locations from read-alouds on maps.



Week 3

1. Continue reading and narrating Paddle-to-the-Sea.

2. Read and narrate 2 folk tales from American Tall Tales.

3. Continue reading and narrating St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

4. Do continent outline.

5. Mary Beth reads The Very Last First Time for Independent Reading. Read about the tundra.

6. Label locations from read-alouds on map



Week 4

1. Finish reading Paddle-to-the-Sea. Narrate favorite parts for notebook. Make a boat and test sail it.

2. Read and narrate 2 folk tales from American Tall Tales.

3. Finish reading St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Narrate for notebook.

4. Read about native animals from animal encyclopedia. Cut out/draw pictures of animals and narrate descriptions for notebook.

5. Mary Beth reads Make Way For Ducklings for Independent Reading.

6. Label locations from read-alouds on map



Week 5

1. Begin reading The Courage of Sarah Noble. Read 1 chapter/day.

2. Read and narrate 2 folk tales; 1 from American Tall Tales and Cendrillon.

3. Read The Lady of Guadalupe. Narrate for notebook.

4. Listen to Fanfare for the Common Man by Copland.

5. Mary Beth reads The Little Red Lighthouse for Independent Reading.

6. Label locations from read-alouds on map



Week 6

1. Finish reading The Courage of Sarah Noble. Narrate favorite parts for notebook.

2. Listen to Glory Stories: St. Kateri Tekakwitha. Narrate for notebook.

3. Read about the Grand Canyon and label on map. Look at Grandma and Grandpa’s pictures. Make a notebook page w/ pictures and narrated descriptions.

4. Listen to Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.



Week 7—Wrap Up

1. Eat a pioneer dinner.

2. Take pictures of crafts and put in notebook w/ descriptions.

3. Narrate favorite picture books for notebook.

4. Go to the zoo and look at North American Prairie exhibit.

5. Finish up notebook pages.

I just started listing the tall tales and folk songs cd's I'm going to take out of the library for Sept. I love how you've organized this. There are many ideas for me to think about. I think you should do it in 5 weeks though, so you can always be 2 weeks ahead of me!

Oh my gosh . I wish I had a 3rd of that done and I've got to write plans for 4 kids this year.

I wanted to recommend Tree in the Trail for a Southwestern study if anyone decides to use Holling for geography. We read it before a trip to Santa Fe a few years ago and it's wonderful.
