anybody use this service? i'm thinking of signing up. i was a week late on a bunch of library videos and owe $40. i don't want to give up watching educational videos, but we can't afford the overdue fines. (yes, of course, it would be best if i returned the videos on time but one week just doesn't seem to work for me.)
so, do you use netflix or something similar? do you like it?

I use netflix, we get two movies at a time. I really like it, haven't tried the educational films yet, but they have a great selection of movies/shows.

We use netflix...they come so fast here...if I mail it today, they get it and send it out tomorrow and I get it the following day. We are working our way through Little House on the Prairie right now and have gotten the David Mccaulay building big DVDs. They have several Catholic movies too...We have been happy. We have the same problem with overdue fees so this works out great. We are currently getting the 5 out at a time so that DH can get his movies, I can have one and the kids get the other two. Other than this we are tv less and this has been a good match for us.

Despite their claims, you can't really rent "as many as you want" for one monthly fee. If you are getting them back too quickly, they will slow down the service from your queue. At first, they were very fast, then they slowed down as we approached the middle of the month. We tested this (ever the scientists), even going so far as to deliver the returns to the post office from whence they are delivered (only a few miles away, right outside the Netflix warehouse--too much time on our hands? ), and still had to wait for them to log them in, a procedure which took up to 2 days. This slow down process is called "throttling," (really) and there may be some legal issues for Netflix down the road if someone gets really worked up about it.
But, I keep asking Don, how many DVDs can one family watch??
BTW, we found Netflix to be more reliable than Blockbuster's delivery service.

I know many Netflix fans. I also have a friend who has really enjoyed using Clean Films. They take out profanity and other offensive language. They also remove n**ity, s**ual situations, and extreme or gory violence. They say their intent is to edit movies so that they become comparable to a PG rating, which often means that they will edit out content that the networks might leave in when they show the same movie on TV.
I haven't made the leap to either (yet )

I am a big Netflix fan for the very reason you mention-overdue fines! I love that I can keep them as long as I want (sometimes dc want to watch one many times before returning) and returning them is as easy as sticking them in the mailbox. No trips to the video store and no overdue charges. It is awesome! I signed up for 5 at a time and there is always something new to watch.

We subscribe to Clean Films. One can rest easy and not listen to God's name taken in vain.
I also check movies at Kids In Mind

Love Netflix. We have 5 at a time so we can get a mix for older/younger/mom & dad. I have not noticed a slowdown in how quickly they come throughout the month. We also enjoy the quick 2 or 3 day turn around someone else already mentioned.
I will also put in a plug for GameFly - essentially the same as Netflix but they do video games.

I love NetFlix, huge selection and great service.
The Throttling you wrote of MacBeth - NetFlix was taken to court and offered free additional rentals to folks this happened to. All 'should' be cleared up now...
Okay, here is a site that looks like it has more info, haven't read it all, but looks like you have until June 26, 2006 to register for a one month upgrade that if you do not cancel at the end of the month you will stay at that level and be charged at that level after the first month. But the first month is free.

It really depends on how many people are watching the movies. We have 5 at a time but this is pulled from 4 different lists. My older children each have a list and get 1 movie at a time, my toddlers/preschoolers have a list and get 2 movies and my dh adn I have our list and get 1 movie. It is nice to be able to have separate queues or lists by age group so you don't end up accidentally having all preschool or all older people movies at once.

so 5 a month is a $30/month plan, right? ok, pardon my frugal nature, but that's almost as much as my overdue fines for 12 videos.

It isn't 5 a month...it is 5 at a time...and you can send them back and receive more as many times as you can or need during the month. We have 5 because of the way my family likes to run things. You don't need that many. Most people do the 3 at a time thing...we do this in place of cable...it was a compromise with my dh to finally turn that off...LOL...HTH!

Sorry if you were mislead by 5 in a month. For example, in the month of May using our 5 at a time for about $30 we rented 20 movies - so it works out to be about $1.50 each rental. We are also not that quick about turning them around because my toddler loves to rewatch hers a million times.
