My 10 yo is reading Nanny McPhee: Based on the Collected Tales of Nurse Matilda. He is absolutely howling with laughter reading this book!

Well, he saw an ad for the new movie (with Emma Thompson and Colin Firth, two of my favorites!) and now is asking to see it. It looks cute, but I see it is rated PG ... has anyone seen it and if so what did you think?

I confess that I haven't seen the movie yet, but here are a couple of "family focused" reviews. Looks intriguing!

The MPAA says it is rated PG for mild thematic elements, some rude humor and brief language.

Coincidentally, there was a review of Nanny McPhee in our Archdiocese's newspaper this morning. I can't find it online, but here is an excerpt:

Title:
"Nanny McPhee is touching, well-acted"

"Some mild innuendo when Brown courts Quickly, and a couple of remarks about incest, which will go over most kids' heads, preclude recommendation for very young children.

"Otherwise this candy-hued fable is delightful viewing and imparts admirable messages about the primacy of family and the inherent goodness of people.

"The film contains some innuendo, mild bad language, rude humor, innocuous shots of cadavers, and macabre childish pranks. The USCCB Office for Film and Broadcasting classification is A-II ~ adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG ~ parental guidance suggested. Some material may not be suitable for children."

Well, the jury is still out for me , so if anyone sees it, please share your opinion here . Thanks!

Here is a link to the USCCB review: Nanny McPhee. (My favorite sites are still the other two :-)

Dawn,
This alone peaked my interest. I think we're in the mood for a book that makes my dc "howl with laughter".

This review at amazon.com inspired me even more to check into it:

"Nurse Matilda is a combination of Mary Poppins, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, and TV's Super Nanny. The three tales of Nurse Matilda's entanglements with the Brown family, which were published individually in the 1960s, might have languished in out-of-print purgatory were it not for a "major motion picture," entitled Nanny McPhee, inspired by the stories."

I called our local Bks-A-Million. They had one copy left. After church this morning, my oldest dd and I drove to get it. It looks delightfully tempting. We'll start reading it tomorrow morning.

Both parents are in the book while only the widowed father appears in the movie.

Thank you for mentioning. I didn't realize the movie was based on a book. I should have known better.    I did see in the book that, yes, Nanny McPhee has a large tooth that sticks out over her bottom lip.

Hi Cay,

I had just got the book on Saturday to use as a read-aloud this week, when my 10 yo got his hands on it, and he just could not put it down ... So I asked him to read it aloud to my 6 yo, which he did, and the two of them laughed together all weekend !

I will have to look for more books that tickle their funny bones so well!

I found a Nanny McPhee website that has a bit of information about the author and illustrator.

Hope you and your children enjoy the book too!

Thank you for the site link, Dawn.
I flipped through the book last night. It does like treatful.

The 1st chapter, which anyone can read at Amazon, made me pause,
"Once upon a time there was a huge family of children; and they were terribly, terribly naughty. In those days, mothers and fathers used to have much larger families than they do now; and these large families often were naughty."

I hope the book doesn't promote naughty behavior without consequences.

But, I understand from reviews that the book does indeed support family closeness. Perhaps the beginning is just a line and bait to hook the child reader into the covers.

We begin today...

Cay,

To be completely honest, I did not read the book along with the boys this time. I had planned to, but they were so eager to read it this weekend, I let them go ahead, hoping it would be OK ...

I don't want to give anything away, but I just asked my son about your concern ...

He said the Brown children definitely have to deal with the consequences of their naughtiness, thanks to Nanny McPhee, and he described several instances of this to me (which I won't relate so as not to ruin any of the surprise for you ).

Hope that helps a bit .

I loved the Nurse Matilda books as a child - I see they have been reprinted with the Nanny McPhee info.

The Brown children definitely learn the consequences of misbehaviour - and I remember the books as being very funny.

My boys saw the movie this week ( the ones aged 10-16) and they all enjoyed it - except for some rude comments in the film.

Thanks Leonie! My oldest is 10 and he's really eager to go see this movie. We are seeing our homeschool friends today and I know he wants me to ask the moms of the older boys (all 10) if can see this together.

I hope you like it! My son was just tickled by it.

By the way, does anyone have any other recommendations for good "funny" reads? My boys have a real taste for humor, but so many books out there end up being more "fresh" than sweet and funny ...

Try The Great Brain series, about 19th century Catholic brothers growing up in Utah and their wonderful, "functional" family and friends.

John Fitzgerald based the books on the real life adventures of his older brother, The Great Brain. They're sooooo funny.

Hi there!
We saw the movie a few weeks ago and we loved it. I took my 7ds, and 6dd. There was some real bawdy(sp?) humor but it went over my dc's heads. The bad lady that the father is trying to marry (not because he wants to) has a VERY low cut dress and dd6 said "that lady was NOT modest"
I was ok with it because she was nasty mean lady who contrasted very vividly with Scullery maid who really loves the children...
I am very picky about the movies my kids see and I loved Nanny McPhee even with the few grown up refrences because good was good and bad was bad...
I hope this makes some sense
God Bless,
Alison

Thanks for all the humor suggestions. We have Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle on reserve at the library.

Pippi Longstocking was another funny favorite. My 10yo read it a year ago or so, but I'm thinking my 6yo would enjoy hearing it read aloud.

Hi everyone!

Just learned yesterday that the movie comes out on May 9.

I saw the movie and there were aspects of it I did not like (see Leonie's comments above), but the overall message of having to live with the consequences of your actions was very LOUD...and the movie was well-acted

I did really enjoy this film...
