I've noticed that there are a lot of movies that Catholics watched when they were kids that the rest of us have never seen (such as the St. Bernadette movie). Now that I am Catholic, I want to play catch up and see all of these movies that most of you probably grew up on.
What are some of the must-sees?
Thanks!

Vanna, these are all excellent stories that you won't be disappointed with IMO, I ONLY wish I could go back and see them all again for the first time!

You would seriously be missing out if you missed The Reluctant Saint: The Story of St. Joseph of Cupertino this movie is one of my all time favorites. I'm a convert too and this was such a joy to watch with my children.
Then there's Quo Vadis. I still tear up at the end when St. Peter heads back to Rome.

Can you get all these movies at the Catholic Netflix? Can anyone remind me of the name and website for the company?

Marilyn,
Do you mean Faith and Family Flicks -- I'm sure you can get lots of these (and they're pretty good about purchasing recommendations).

What about Romero, the story of a martyred bishop from Central America. It starred Raul Julia as the bishop and might be on some people's no-no list because of the liberation theology presented in the movie.
Another good one the check out is The Jeweler's Shop (or maybe it is The Jewelry Shop?). It is a movie based on a play written by the late Pope John Paul II before he became a bishop.

Also, you might want to get the Ignatius Press catalog as they have a GREAT selection of videos. Some of the kid-vids are a bit but the family and adult movies are some of the best made -- we're getting a nice collection of the saint ones like St. Rita, St. John Bosco, Padre Pio (the Italian who plays St. Pio is King Miraz in the new Prince Caspian!), etc.
We also have enjoyed the Tree of Wooden Clogs and I Am David (which are not specifically Catholic but have great messages!).
The Disney-distributed movie, Endurance (which is hard to find), is about an Ethiopian runner who took the world by storm in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics -- lots of great coverage of the Ethiopian Catholic rite (including shots of a Baptism and a funeral)....really cool from lots of perspectives!

Suzanne -- do you know why Black Robe is R? Romero, Mission and some others are R and they were fine for my older kids -- I'm just wondering?

I do! Black Robe is a great movie but most definitely for adults only. There was at least one scene that made me blush (involving a priest and a native woman). And I don't blush easily.

Suzanne,
You have to move The Inn of the Sixth Happiness and I Confess to the top of your Blockbuster or Netflix queue right now!

Just found out there IS a Catholic netflix:
Pius Media
haven't tried it yet, but thinking about it!
Wow, they even have a saint calendar at the bottom left sidebar, click on June, for instance, and it will take you to the Saints for June. Then click on the Saint and it will take you to the movie(s)!!! Love that feature!

Looks good! I think I'm going to sign up and try it out for a month or two. They don't have just Catholic movies, but other "family friendly" movies as well. I love their tag line: "Entertainment your mother approves!" Although I'm not sure about the grammar-is it correct? We are on a grammar kick here after reading Eats, Shoots and Leaves. But I digress. If anyone has experience with Pius Media, what are your thoughts??

Two of my favorite 'not explicitly Catholic but very profoundly Catholic' movies are On the Waterfront and Angels with Dirty Faces. Beautiful stories, with stunning acting and directing.
Another one that isn't quite as profound, but still with Catholic themes, is Captains Courageous with Spencer Tracy. As much as I love it, though, I rarely watch it, because it's such a tear-jerker!

I just came across I printed out from the Catholic Education Resource Center last year....
The Fifty Best Catholic Movies of All Time
It's a really good list...
"The best religious films, and therefore the best Catholic films, convey the great truths of Christianity implicitly rather than explicitly.
The best religious films, and therefore the best Catholic films, convey the great truths of Christianity implicitly rather than explicitly, not unlike the mystery of incarnation itself, in which the Word became flesh in the person of an obscure carpenter from a hick town in a minor province. In addition, this list consists primarily of films that deal with Catholic characters, Catholic society, and the Bible in ways that are not hostile to the Church. Most of them were made by Catholic directors.
It is interesting to note that the three best directors who ever worked in Hollywood, Frank Capra, John Ford, and Alfred Hitchcock, were all practicing Catholics. So much for the detrimental effects in these times of the Church upon art."
