This is not really a "rabbit trail" but my 2 year old daughter is completely taken with stars, and the moon. She talks about them all the time, and gets so, so excited whenever she sees the shapes of them (in a book or on tv), and especially when she sees them outside! She's been this way for months! Soooooo, I am wondering if anyone knows of other good books for very little people about the moon and the stars----here are the few favorites so far--
Good night Moon
"I Like Stars" (Margaret Wise Brown, in the young readers section but I wish there was a nicer edition with big pictures!)
Maggies Moon
I thought it would be fun to find a few more stories for her.
It's interesting to me that such a little person could have such an--abiding interest--!

Moondance was my daughter's favorite book when she was about 2. I saved the title page and put it in her scrapbook.
There is also Happy Birthday Moon, Mooncake, Moongame, and more by this same author, Frank Ashe.
Papa please get the moon for me, Eric Carle
The Moon Book, Gibbons
Owl Moon
Kitten's First Full Moon
There are lots of poems about the Moon in "nighttime poem books":
When the Dark Comes Dancing, Larrick
Sleep Baby Sleep

Oh, yes, I would second all the Frank Asch moon books. My children have loved them and they are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers.
I also like Kitten's First Full Moon that Suzanne mentioned. It's so sweet and simple for that age. A book that is similar in that a character on earth has a mistaken notion of how the moon phases come about and in fact think they influenced it is this one - Moon Mouse
The Moon Might be Milk - several animals think they know what the moon is made of, includes a recipe for making Moon Cookies with those ingredients.

Many Moons by James Thurber.
Here's the edition with the original illustrations
Basket Moon by Mary Lyn Ray and Barbara Cooney, and
A Cloak for the Moon by Eric Kimmel
(but they might be too long for a younger child)

Found a couple other preschool picture books.
Catching the Moon - a whimsical story about the Man in the Moon who visits an old fisherwoman one night a month (new moon).
The Moon - illustrated version of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem, "The Moon" from his Children's Garden of Verses. Very cute.
The Moon
by Robert Louis Stevenson
The moon has a face like the clock in the hall;
She shines on thieves on the garden wall,
On streets and fields and harbour quays,
And birdies asleep in the forks of the trees.
The squalling cat and the squeaking mouse,
The howling dog by the door of the house,
The bat that lies in bed at noon,
All love to be out by the light of the moon.
But all of the things that belong to the day
Cuddle to sleep to be out of her way;
And flowers and children close their eyes
Till up in the morning the sun shall arise.

The first poem all three of my little ones learned, before they were two!, is "I See the Moon":
I see the moon, and the moon sees me.
God bless the moon!
And God bless me!
They would only say the last word and point to themselves, at first. But they, all three!, were/are so excited about it that we would say it every night, and anytime we could see the moon outside.
(That's why, on my blog, the title over the widget showing the moon's phases is, "God Bless the Moon"! )
Warmly,
Eileen

Eileen, we do exactly the same thing!! Another beloved story is Wait Til the Moon is Full by Margaret Wise Brown, it's adorable and great for Moon Phases!

thanks again for the ideas--
we are still enthralled here!
Eric Carle's "Draw Me a Star" is the new favorite. And the Eric Carle on video, "Papa, Get the Moon for Me."
Grandma bought her some glow in the dark stars for her ceiling. Every night we turn out the light and look at the stars together. At dinnertime she thanks Jesus for her stars. Now I'm so excited because after Grandma hunted EVERYWHERE and came up empty, I just found a glow in the dark curved MOON to go with it at our local grocery store for one dollar! A surprise for her stocking .

Wow! so cool I saw this thread. My 20 month old is the SAME way! One night after looking at the stars and moon she cried forever in her bed "Stars! Stars!" because she wanted to still be outside looking!
She ALWAYS spots the moon during the day -- even when it's really faint.
Thanks for all the ideas!

The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton includes the moon and stars on several different pages of the story. The Little House loved to see them in the country. She could hardly see them when the city lights began to encroach. She couldn't see them at all when the city overtook her. She was overjoyed to see them again at the end when her owner moves her to the country!

I will definately have to check this out.
I am SO thankful to be living, for the first time I can remember, really, in a tiny little town where we really SEE the stars! Driving home at night is so fun!

I want to see the Moon is a really sweet book with great illustrations. I just remembered about this one. My little sister memorized the entire thing at the age of 3 or so.

Bilby Moon.
It's an Australian picture book. Sorry I don't know the author.
A Bilby is a VERY cute marsupial. They are an endangered animal.

Faces of the Moon - by Bob Crelin
published 2009
Explains the phases of the moon in rhyming text. Very fun read but also a great science text since very factual info is presented in lyrical text. Each page has a cut-out section representing the moon at each phase, so you can watch the moon wax and wane on each page as you follow it through it's complete cycle.
And we are going to have a "blue moon" this month (December 2009) - two full moons in one month - worth noting.
