So, I was wondering, could we have a post about which Montessori books you recommend? And then make it sticky? Pretty Please? With CHOCOLATE on top?
I am rather new to this, but I have these on my shelf:
Montessori 'How To' Books:
Britton, Lesley Montessori Play and Learn: A Parent's Guide to Purposeful Play from Two to Six
Gettman, David Basic Montessori: Learning Activities for the Under Fives
Hainstock, Elizabeth Montessori At Home: The Preschool Years
Montessori, Maria The Montessori Method (free) or, if you prefer a real book to buy
Seldin, Tim How to Raise an Amazing Child the Montessori Way
What about books on other subjects?

For some of the philosophy/mindset, I have loved the following (some are more academic, than practical):
The Child in the Church
The Secret of Childhood
The Child in the Family
Education and Peace
Absorbent Mind
all by M. Montessori
I have others - they're just packed right now...

Year ago, a friend of mine who was a Montessori teacher suggested that her absolute top pick for parents to read was The Secret of Childhood. Unfortunately, she told me about it over the phone...what I heard was The Secretive Childhood, which didn't sound nearly as compelling, and frankly, kind of creepy. Took the librarian to sort me out.
I highly recommend Montessori Read and Write by Lynne Lawrence--it's got loads of great ideas and photographs (those are such a help!) I scored my copy through one of the Montessori boards for about $8. Hainstock's second book, Teaching Montessori in the Home: The School Years is also great. Out of print, but pretty easy to get.
Those are the two I really enjoy and refer to often.

All of the above, and a couple of others: Paula Polk Lillard's books are good overviews. Angeline Stoll Lillard's Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius. Gianna Gobbi's Listening to God with Children. And anything by Sofia Cavelletti.

I found the book The Discovery of the Child at a thrift store for 50 cents back in March of this year. I think that's what got me started on this Montessori kick!

Google Books has quite a few Montessori e-books available. Here's a link to the search results for books that contain the word "Montessori," and are available in Full View (i.e., you can read the whole book for free).
From that list, here are some titles I'd especially recommend:
Dr. Montessori's Own Handbook, The Montessori Method, and The Advanced Montessori Method, all by MM herself
A Montessori Mother, by Dorothy Canfield Fisher (author of Understood Betsy, and one of the original promoters of the method in the USA)
Several of the other books contain descriptions of the Montessori Method by various American "education experts" of the early 20th century. Although these are interesting to read, I wouldn't recommend them to a beginner, as they're often inaccurate in their representation of the method. Mrs. Fisher is a notable exception, since she worked closely with Dr. Montessori, and had a deep understanding of the philosophy.
If you click on "Limited Preview," you can see a lot more books that are only partially available online, including Donna Goertz's Children Who Are Not Yet Peaceful.

YES, great idea Rachel, I'll work on that ASAP!! My download from the conference will have some too, but probably nothing that isn't already here.
Blessings!
