I would like to get a kids magazine subscription for my girls. I think something centered around animals would be good. I was thinking of Your Big Backyard or National Geographic Little Kids. What do you think? Have you had a magazine subscription for your kids? If so, did they enjoy it? What was the magazine and how old were they? TIA!
Oh btw, dd's are 4.5yo and 5.5yo.

Good ole Highlights is a favorite around her teme. I subscribed to it once, but since then have been able to pick up little supplies of them as hand-offs or at library sales etc...and have steady supply to refresh them when they are looked over too many times. The little stories and puzzles are great "waiting" entertainment and good for one on one snuggle time with a nursing mommy!

Our favorite is Nature Friend. We've enjoyed it for several years now. Very gentle. Christian content. My kids watch the mailbox for it every month. We gave up all other subscriptions.

We really enjoy My Big Backyard and recently subscribed to the new Nat'l Geographic Little Kids mag and we love it.

Ann, if you had to pick between the two, which one would you choose? I know My Big Backyard, there is an issue every month whereas Nat'l Geo. Little Kids, it comes out every 2mo. Are the Nat'l Geo. Little Kids thicker issues since they only come out with 6 a year? TIA!!

I stand corrected "Your" Big Backyard has 30 pages and is mostly real pictures with just a few illustrations. It always has a rebus story and a little "cut and make" book about whatever the theme is-March was otters and my 5 yr old DD loves making the little book.
There are also some family activities/crafts/etc.
When I sit down with the kids and read thru it they all (2,5,8) love it and the pictures are wonderful. But it's not one they pick up on their own for some reason....but we do have tons of books at any given time.
I do keep these and they are great when an animal is of interest and we can look at these for basic info.
NG Little Kids is 23 pages (so not bigger due to fewer issues) and is smaller sized-6.25in x 7in. It's geared towards 3-5yr olds according to the cover. I agree with that age range and would say it's perfect for the 3-4 yr old. I got it for my 2.5 yr old and he loves it.
The pics are great and it's very engaging. Not overwhelming and well spaced. But it is a simpler layout/style.
It picks a country like Africa and highlights an animal, the culture (pics of people and houses) and a little game or maze.
Again, mostly real pictures but a few illustrations. Also has a rebus story and some very basic beginning matching/counting/sorting activities. It also comes with a few tear out "trading card" type animal cards.
Has one activity at end, last one was "blue goo"
If you can get only one then Big Backyard is the better value and more information, especially for the older child.
But if you can get both, the younger one would love the Little Kids mag.
These were Christmas gifts from grandma (I got to pick)so that's why we have both

My kids LOVED Your Big Backyard. We have enough back issues saved up from the older kids that my dd can just look through them rather than get a new subscription. They also are great to cut up for collages, etc when you need animal pics.

Our two favorites here are Big Backyard and Highlights. Our younger have enjoyed the Spider magazine from Carus publishing. It is wonderful for my 7yob.

check your local library for children's magazines.
that way you can give them a "test read" before ordering any you like.
God bless,
Mary
