Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Haha, Marilyn, you just gave me an idea. I didn't even THINK that I could buy some pastries for St. Lucy's Day. You're a genius.

But sorry, no, I don't have any ideas.

There's one in Simple Gifts Magazine

But I also posted the St. Lucia Day article on my website to give everyone a taste of the magazine.

My oldest daughter and son will be making Lussekatter for our family. Looking forward to a wonderful day - our second son will make his First Reconciliation on the Feast of St. Lucia, too.

Blessings,

I don't know about easy, Marilyn, but I plan to try this one:

Saint Lucia Braided Bread (by Family Fun)

(instead of cranberries, I may use raisins...or a combo of both...or neither...not sure yet.)

We made this last year and it is super easy. Yeast tends to scare me like Karen E. but this recipe was really easy to make.

Marilyn...do you use a bread machine? I usually just do a sweet dough recipe in the dough cycle, add a little cardamon (instead of the saffron), maybe raisins, or almonds, and then shape how I want.....braided if I'm feeling ambitious, but usually in circle buns. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Marilyn, last year Panera had amazing holiday bread. I used canned dough to sort of copy it for Saint Lucy's day. The girls got to add to the canned dough and our semi-homemade rolls were good enough to repeat this year.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. My resident "Saint Lucia" was very reluctant to wake up this morning but she finally pulled herself out of bed and we have made the Family Fun dough above- but we will have to have the bread for an early lunch as we have to let it rise now! Of course Panera is a 5 minute ride away if we get desperate - thanks for the tip Elizabeth. I will post pictures of the finished product - assuming it works of course

Well, at least she's up. My dd is still snoring. LOL

Nori's St. Lucia - clothes pin doll is as close to dressing up as we are going to get today.

We also made the Family Fun bread and it was wonderful! Ours was also served at lunch as we were not up early enough to have it for breakfast. Will plan better next year!

Ok, we just had a VERY LATE St. Lucia celebration. I made the Family Fun bread this afternoon and -- it never rose! At all! What did I do wrong? Did I get the milk too hot and kill the yeast maybe? Everyone liked the bread, but it was a little, um, chewy .
