Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Antheneum Books 2007

keywords: lightship crew galley ships sea waves storm fog horn light anchor

Amazon link

You Tube video trailer for the book.

It won the Cybil award for best non-fiction picture book 2007. It is easy to see why, as it is a great book with whimsical illustrations that almost put you to sea with the ship and crew (and cute cat that the kids had fun finding in the illustrations). Before reading this book I had never heard of lightships - ships with large light beacons and horns, that moored at dangerous locations (like reefs and entrances to narrow channels) where lighthouses could not be built. It is an engaging presentation of what I think is a little known aspect of navigation history.

My three and a half year old son LOVES this book. He went through a period where it was THE naptime book, every day. He especially loves the BEEYOOOOH! page, of course (if you've read the book you'll know what I mean). Truly, it is a favorite in our home.

You must do a really good foghorn imitation - I wasn't quite sure how to "pronounce" it.

Thanks for posting the coloring pages, Philothea. I had meant to do that but forgot.

Here is a link to the locations of the existing lightships in the US. It would be fun to visit one if nearby.

Lucky you! Being land-locked in the Rocky Mountains we don't have any ships nearby to visit . There is one in Astoria, Oregon and I think we will add that to our tourist plans when we go to my brother's wedding in Portland this fall.
