Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Checked out the book Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke, from the library as a possible read-aloud. Anyone know of any thing I should be concerned about?

I liked that one. I actually read it, as it had caught my eye. I enjoyed it, and "stratigically" placed it so dd16 would see it (she can be more receptive if mom hasn't outright suggested it, per se) She really liked it too. It was awhile ago, though, and I can't remember specifically if there were things in particular that I could caution you about.

My kids liked it. There are a few mild explatives, but Libby attributes it to the translation...some German slang is often translated as "dam_".

You may want to consider Inkspell a little more closely. It is the sequel to Inkheart. It is as entertaining, although there is a bit of discussion about the protagonists onset of puberty and the changes (physically and emotionally) going on in her life and that of her romantic interest. It is probably ok for a twelve year old, depending on maturity, but might be a bit too much for a nine or ten year old.

Just my two cents...

Thank you, Mary Kate! I definitely do not want to go there with ds just yet!

My son read Inkheart and loved it. Tonight at the library the children's librarian gave me two books for him - Eldest and Inkspell. I later met friends for coffee and one friend told me she heard from *her* librarian that Inkspell might not be suitable for 9-11 yos. My ds is 11.

All this to say, Mary Kate (or anyone who has read it) can you tell me a bit more about this book?

Bumping this.

I am wondering about Inkspell as well.

My oldest has been listening to Inkheart on tape and I wanted to know if anyone can expound on the sequel.

I don't know about Inkheart or Inkspell, but Anthony got Dragon Rider as a gift (from the same uncle who gave Maria Junie B. ). The set up is all about the evil humans who take over everything, don't live peacefully with other creatures, ruin nature.... I'm planning to read them myself before letting the kids dig in.

We've been discussing this series at Lit Alive!. One of the members wrote:

"My family loved these stories. We listened to Brendan Frazier read them, and my
kids are eager for the final of the trilogy (as am I!). There is mild swearing,
truly "bad guys," and a more mature plot line. I would not recommend them for
kids under 10 or so. For a book lover, the size, font, and binding of these
books is excellent.

"The general plot is that Mo, a bookbinder, has the ability to actually read
things out of books. One night, while reading Inkheart aloud to his wife and
young daughter, the evil villian of the story and two others appeared in his
living room while his wife and two cats vanished, presumably into the book.
Fast forward ten years, and the story begins. Meggie, Mo's daughter, discovers
Dustfinger, a shadowy figure, lurking around the house. Who is he? What does he
want? A complex plot involving adventure, kidnapping, magic (reading in and out
of books) and a severe love of books and the printed word ensues over two
volumes.

My 13 year old dd just finished Inkheart and is now ready to move on to Inkspell. Your comments were very helpful to me when I was deciding if it would be a suitable book for her...thanks! Has anyone read the third book, Inkdeath? I am sure that she will finish this book in no time and be asking if she can read the final one.

my 10 and up boys love the entire series so far and we happen to also like Brendan Frasier, so we're double excited about the movie coming out.

I haven't read the third yet (it is on the ever-growing pile on my nightstand) but my DH has. I will ask him and report back his impression (I probably won't make it back in time before the cut-off - so tomorrow night?)

I am very, very nervous, from seeing the previews, about *just* how far they have strayed from the storyline. DH agrees.

I have to wonder (after seeing the same thing happen recently with Despereaux, and Twilight, if scriptwriters are all wanna-be authors who think they can make the book they are adapting "better". I mean, the books gets made into a movie because people make the story so popular and they love the story as told. They don't want people to "make it better." I can not think of a movie where I said, "Oh, that was SO much better than the book! I am SO glad they changed it!" Anyway, sorry, little rant there

Martha and Laura, thanks for the info. Dd probably won't be looking for the third book until later this week, so I'll be eagerly awaiting what your dh thinks of the book.

We brought Inkheart on CD with us on a recent car trip, and everyone was transfixed! Our version was read by Lynn Redgrave, who did wonderful voices.

As for Inkspell and Inkdeath (what a clunky title), even the reviewers on Amazon seem to say that it's unfortunate that Cornelia Funke forgot who her audience was, and the books get increasingly more violent and mature.

Laura, what did your DH think of them?

I feel like such a dope.

Sorry.

DH actually *isn't* done with Inkdeath yet. I thought he was because of where the book had been left. He just misplaced it. He is very close to being done, and says it is good, and I will get specifics from him.

Again, sorry, I really thought he was done.
