Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dd13 likes GA Henty, I know many here don't but she does. I am planning on buying some soon, I know some are said to be anti- Catholic. So could anyone in the 'know' tell me which ones not to purchase? Thanks

I don't like Henty - the only one I tried I couldn't get past the first chapter - but I think most are OK from the content point of view. The ones to avoid are those set around the Reformation period, as those are where his English Protestant bias creeps in.

I think specific titles to avoid would be:

St. Bartholomew's Eve
Under Drake's Flag
By England's Aid
Lion of the North

His books pertaining to earlier historical periods (pre 1500s) and much later historical periods (late 1700s on) tend to be less problematic.

The "Cat of Bubastes" is on cd and was very good.

Great question, Erin, I'm planning out our Middle Ages study and am wrestling book ideas now. During Ancients dd enjoyed Henty, specifically the Cat of Bubastes, Kelly.
I enjoyed how it took her more than a morning to read keeping up with a voracious reader can be so tough!

It is so hard for me to keep up with a voracious reader and I have so many books, I don't know how you manage with limited space. I hope you have a great library system. I am at the point that dd has nearly finished all the books in our house!- I kid you not. Sounds like your Marianna is a speed reader too.

She definitely is, Erin. We are at the library many times a week, the librarians know us very well...which is helpful as they are now letting us take out Reference materials and magazines like Cobblestones which are not supposed to be checked out.

I really rely on 4Real for book reviews, very helpful in keeping Marianna in books!
