Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A local friend of mine was raised with the tradition that if you fall asleep during a rosary that there is a certain saint who is committed to finishing it for you. Was anyone else raised with this? If so, is there a name of a specific saint attached?

Love,

I was taught it was my guardian angel who would finish it.

I hear that Fr. Mike Scanlon (former president of Steubenville) used to say that when he died he would become the Patron Saint of Unfinished Rosaries.

Sorry, Angie, I know it's not the 'serious' answer you were looking for, but I had to throw it in the mix.

:)

Thank you both! Not having been raised with much Catholic tradition or Tradition, I am always interested in the little ways Catholic parents share their faith with their children.

There is something very attractive and sweet in picturing a saint or guardian angel (or someday Fr. Scanlon ) finishing the rosary of an exhausted loved one. It reminds me of gentle care...like when a child falls asleep in bed with the light still on and a book open, and mama turns of the light, places a book marker in the the book, and tucks the child in bed with a kiss.

Love,

I too heard your angel will finish your rosary prayers. I have a friend who was so very ill in the hospital. She was sharing a room and sadly the lady next to her took a turn for the worse and was dying. The nurses came and moved my friend to the room next door because this lady suffered so during her final hours. Even more sadly, she was by herself. My friend, who as well had her own pain, began to pray the rosary. She was so very tired but she said the moaning of this woman kept her awake, or at least she thought so.

My friend drifted off to sleep. When she awoke, her fingers were still on the rosary, not completed, and remembered what had happened. She rang for the nurse and asked about the lady. The nurse said that just when things seemed to be really terrible for her, she quieted down, and passed peacefully. My friend doesn't remember this at all, she remembers only the lady moaning. So she attributes this lady's final peaceful death to her guardian angel, for finishing the rosary.

Anyways...kind of a long story, but I'll never forget that lesson!

OK, I have goosebumps...I just went googling, looking for information unrelated to this question, ended up at wikiHow and look what I found:

"Some people will tell you it is not proper to say a Rosary to help yourself get to sleep at night. This is a mistake. It is perfectly acceptable. What better way to fall asleep than with the words of these lovely prayers in your mind? Saint Bernadette, who had visions of Mary at Lourdes, actually recommended this practice and said "It's like a little child going to sleep saying 'Mama, Mama.'" There is also a lovely tradition that your guardian angel finishes the Rosary for you, after you fall asleep."

Wow!

Thanks for your sweet story, Kacky.

Love,

What beautiful stories! I keep my guardian angel very busy while I'm awake and while I'm asleep!    I can't tell you how many times I've fallen asleep while saying the Rosary!
