I ordered some religion books from Seton for my kindergarten and preschool girls. Then i went to CHC and found a ton of great books i really want to get them. Does anyone like their religion books for kindergartners? There are 15 items on my wishlist. lol

Do you mean God's Love Story? I used this when my oldest dd was in Kindergarten and we both enjoyed it. I did NOT like the catechism text they suggest for Kindergarten. I thought the workbook activities were silly and the "lessons" felt forced to me. I like A Catholic How-to-Draw, but my dd is not very artistically inclined, so that one has sat on the shelf a lot. I think that Stories to Learn By is twaddle, but my kids love it. Go figure. I have not bought the Treasure Box books--I have looked at some of them in a Catholic bookstore and I thought they were twaddle, too. Definately not worth $80 for a whole set of twaddle! A Year With God is really nice and is full of ideas for celebrating the liturgical year. When my 4yod is in kindergarten, I plan to use God's Love Story combined with living the liturgical year (hoping to use Catholic Mosaic for that!) for Religion. CHC's other kindergarten materials have the Catholic faith woven into them, so I don't think my dd will be missing out in any way by my leaving out the catechism textbook, especially if I use Catholic Mosaic.
HTH,
Dawn

I agree with Dawn about the "Who am I" catechism book. I used it for a while with my oldest son when he was in kindergarten but we did not finish it. We also had, but did not use, a Catholic How to Draw.
A different perspective on the Treasure Box series. Our family LOVES the Treasure Box books. They are filled with stories of the saints, Our Lady and Lord and sweet little games and songs. Our copies are dog eared and well used. We have had many wonderful discussions of Faith based upon those books. The little children seem to love that the stories are continued in the next book. My Mary Kathryn and I were reading one recently about St. Therese the Little Flower which she really enjoyed. I use them for my preschoolers and the K-2 set. I highly recommend them.

Gods Love Story is high on my list. I did want to buy the Stories to Learn By but i guess if it's just twaddle, then maybe not. Im not buying any kind of workbooks. I think for religion, we'll do lots of read alouds and discussions. From Seton, i got their Catechism books for kindergartners and a book about Mother Mary along with a coloring book they can do after i read out loud to them. I really want to get the Celebrating the Liturgical Year too.
How about Devotional Stories for Little Folks? Little Book of Saints? and Guiding your Catholic Preschooler?
Rebecca, do you have both sets of the Catholic Treasure Box?

Yes, I have both sets. The latter stories build on the previous books. We bought them for my oldest son's birthday when he was two and have read them his siblings also.
My kids really like Stories to Learn By as well . They are not "great literature" but they each teach a moral lesson in a humorous way. My littles enjoy them a lot.
I have not read the others on your list, with the exception of Guiding Your Catholic Preshooler, which I read years ago and found to be helpful.

Oh gosh, we LOVE the Treasure Box series! Even my 11 yo enjoys them!
I also agree about the workbooks - I've bought them every year (Image of God) because we haven't been doing CCD and I felt I needed something "explainable" for lack of a better word. You kow when in laws ask what you are doing *instead* of CCD? Of course then we never use them ...

We used the Devotional Stories for Little Folks for our devotional reading during our "couch time" at the beginning of each school day. The kids loved it and it is dog eared as it's been read and re-read. Just our experience with that book!
God bless,
Angela

When I first saw Treasure Box, I thought it was contrived and twaddly. My children adore these books. They love the sweetness. They love the stories. They even ask for them at bedtime, when they could choose from anything in the house. I'm really surprised, honestly. I got them because Alice got them . Well worth the money...

I like Guiding Your Catholic Preschooler, too. I bought Devotional Stories for Little Folks for my 2nd grader this year, and I like what I've read in it so far.

the treasury box books (we have both sets, they were a birthday present from my oldest sons' godparents) are some of my children's favorite books. they still use their sacrifice beads that they made after reading about them in one of the books. we read the TB every other year and my kids never seem to tire of the stories. we have also enjoyed devotional stories for little folks. we didn't finish the who am i? book either (pre and K books) because my boys were not so excited about coloring. i thought about getting them for my daughter because she is all about coloring, but then catholic mosiac came out and i'm busy buying up books.

I have to second (or third ) the Treasure Box books.
I bought these years ago when my 8 yr old was about three. She loves these books. I pulled them out these week to put aside for Annie's kindergarten year this fall. Chelsea came along and took off with them. I found her on the windwo seat in the hallway reading through each one of them.
THere is something beautiful in that little treasure box of books.

Thanks for starting this topic. I already received my CHC order for next year, but I am still second guessing myself about the things I didn't buy. I purchased God's Love Story, the Phonics program and the handwriting books for Kindergarten. After reading this, I'm glad that I passed on the Who Am I books.
Do you (the adults) enjoy reading Stories to Learn By and The Treasure Box books, or are they only enjoyable for your children? I guess I don't want to spend $40 or more and be bored reading them.
For 2nd grade I only ordered Faith and Life 2, AYWG, the handwriting book, Art with a Purpose and a CD. I'm still thinking maybe I should get Devotional Stories for Little Folks and Catholic Stories from Science, but would these be better to read than some of the books on the Real Learning booklist or FIAR books? There's only so much time in a day. It's hard to know what they are like without seeing copies of the books for myself. What do you who have read them think?
I've decided that I'm definitely going to do a First Communion notebook/album and I'm still thinking about getting Catholic Mosaic. What ages would you say are best for reading the Catholic Mosaic books and doing the activities? Next year my dc will be 8, 6 & 4 1/2.

Dd1 will be 5 in Sept and dd2 is 3.5yo. Im getting the Catholic Mosaic. I think it will be such a great tool to help live and raise them in our Faith. I was actually at a loss on how i teach them about our Faith but i think Catholic Mosaic has helped me with that answer. I am also starting to go to Daily Mass with teh girls. My older one is very good but my younger one still gets a little antsy but not to the point she's a distraction.

I would agree with Elizabeth's comment. At first I thought the Treasure Box rather twaddly, however as I have read them I've grown to love them myself. I am not bored by them as I enjoy seeing that they do have an impact on the children, they lead to lots of discussions And my older children love to listen in too.

We loved Catholic Stories from Science- absolutely delightful in my opinion. However, science is the weakest area in our house and this sort of stimulated a new way of looking at the world. It would go along with anything and could easily be read story at a time according to what else you were doing. For whatever it is worth, not only did my dc enjoy this one, but I absolutely loved it.
Devotional Stories were a bit more contrived to me but my son who isn't a big reading fan (unless it is science related)liked them. It served its purpose for us, for whatever that is worth.

Our children are also enchanted with the Treasure Box Books. They cannot wait to hear the next Wupsy story. We made sacrifice beads because of the stories about Little Thérèse. Yes, they are worth a bookshelf of books!
I don't know if I call the Stories to Learn By twaddle.. but I can share what they were PERFECT for: when I brought in read alouds to our Parish's First Grade CCD class. Sadly, many of the students are dropped off by parents who wish for them to "jump through the hoop" of receiving their first Holy Communion (for nostalia's sake?? I don't know) and then they do not come to church again. They spend their early days in Daycare and move onto public school and afterschool care . Homelife is simply not centered on Christ . Those stories were just right for many of the students. The curriculum for that class is Pflaum and for that grade, I found their Promise Guides to be rather twaddly so the "Stories to Learn By" was a step up.
I assisted with the second grade this year and I read a couple of stories from our Devotional Stories. The first being about Penance and the second one was the one where the children were riding by a non catholic church that was very close to their home. It clearly and charitably explained in the story what separates the other Christian churches from the Catholic Church. It was nice to have a story that confirmed what the children had been taught all year.

Elizabeth, your honesty gives me a chuckle . This Catholic Homeschooling Mother's "Peer Pressure" can often be quite beneficial as your post indicates. I have a small stack of books that I have purchased just from the discussion on these boards. I think of "Lasagna Gardening" and "Saving Dinner" off the top of my head. I find that the recommendations from this board are often right in line with the priorities we have for our family. With much discernment, of course .
Blessings,

LOL. I resisted the Treasure Box books, too. I finally caved a month ago. I read the first one about St. Therese as a baby and even my 9 yo came over to listen and they've been bugging me ever since to read the next story.
For some reason, they remind me a little bit of a very Catholic version of the Golden Books. The illustrations are very similar.
Thanks for the review on the Devotional Stories book. I've been debating whether or not to get that one.
Stories to learn by? We have it. My oldest dd didn't like it. We'll see how it goes with my 1st grader this year. She likes things my older one didn't. If she doesn't like it, I may sell it.
I don't like reading Stories to Learn By. It feels boring to me. I like reading the Treasure Box books, though. Charlotte Mason must be rolling in her grave!
