Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Would this be appropriate for my dd to invite her three best friends over for something like this? I don't think that they will be able to attend each others' celebrations at home after FHC, since they will all have out of town family visiting and need to be the little hostesses at their own gatherings. So first off, is this overkill? Secondly, if we end up doing this, do you ladies have any cute ideas for crafts or symbolic things we could serve for snacks? Or on the table? Or any ideas - you all are overflowing with such rich and beautiful ideas. I'm a recent convert and I'm just discovering all these traditions. Thank you!

I think it would be a nice way for all of them to celebrate each other's FHC!!!

Yes, Marianne, I do have some ideas (in fact, this has been in my head for quite some time!)--I'll try to write more later! It's been a crazy day!

Marianne,

I am planning to post a complete First Holy Communion Tea Menu on my blog sometime in the next month or so.

In the meantime, here are my rough notes on the subject copied directly from the notebook I keep in my purse! These are in a raw stage now, but perhaps you will find them helpful:

First Holy Communion Tea Menu

First Communicant's Punch
Body, Blood Soul and Divinity Tea Sandwiches
Grapes and Unleavened Bread
Black and White Cookies (significance explained below)
Coeur de Creme OR Sacred Heart Cupcakes

(I am almost embarrassed to post this because it is in such a half finished state.)

Ingredients and Recipe Suggestions:

For the First Communicants' Punch:

Combine flavored seltzer with grape juice or grape punch. Float sherbert on top, preferably in purple, along with frozen grapes. (Explain to the children that the wine used in Holy Communion is made from grapes.)

For the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity Tea Sandwiches:

Make simple sandwiches of thin white bread, cream cheese and grape jelly. Cut with a round cookie cutter.

Explain to the children that the thin white bread represents the "Body," the grape jelly the "Blood," the cream cheese the pure and sinless "Soul" and the round shape the infinite "Divinity."

Needless to say, this is an IMPERFECT SYMBOL, but it may make an impression on the children, especially because the ingredients stick and fuse together making something that cannot be separated.

For the Grapes and Unleavened Bread:

These things just seem to belong on the tea table, don't they? Use purple grapes and perhaps pita bread. Keep the pita bread whole and show the children how it is broken. You might even want to consider having some type of grape wine so that each child may take a sip.

Why black and white cookies?

To symbolize that our dear Lord Jesus Christ was true God (white) and true man (Black--although He was sinless!)

Coeur a la Creme

Coeurs a la creme are beautiful creamy white hearts made in individual molds and served on top of a pure red sauce. They remind me of the pure Heart of Jesus and the blood and water that gushed forth from His side. If you click the link above, you will see molds and recipes for this perfect dessert.

You could also tell the children that the white hearts represent the purity of their hearts as they approach the Blessed Sacrament, and the red sauce is like their burning love for our dear Lord.

OR

If that is too difficult, bake Sacred Heart Cupcakes:

Use heart shaped muffin tins to make cupcakes (red cupcakes would work well). Ice with a red or pink frosting. Use broken pretzels to make a crown of thorns, a bit of red decorator icing for a wound, and something yellow for the flame.

Possibilities for the yellow include Lemon Curd, Yellow fruit leather or fruit roll ups cut into a flame shape, or some other gummy yellow or orange candy flattened and arranged in a flame shape.

*******
Again, this is very rough and needs lots and lots of testing and tweaking, but it at least a preview of some ideas.

This is a tea, not a meal, but if you wanted to make it more substantial, you could include cold cuts and offer them alongside the pita.

Another possibility would be a mozzarella and tomato salad.

Layer sliced mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, and fresh basil, splashing with olive oil and vinegar. This is rich with symbolism for First Communicants--the white of the mozzarella is purity, the red tomatoes for Jesus' love for them (or these colors could represent blood and water), the basil is a symbol of the crucifixion. The olive oil represents the Garden of Gethsemane and the Vinegar reminds us of the vinegar offered to Him while He hung on the cross.

Just a few unedited thoughts!!! : )

Alice, thank you so much! Might not get to use this until next year, but I'm keeping your ideas in a file and looking forward to your blog post. You are incredible.

My son will be making his FHC in May and I wanted to do something like this. This sounds wonderful!
