I'm very happy to suggest
Edward Elgar
1857-1934
An English (and Catholic) composer.
We began with the video Jaqueline DuPre and the Elgar Cello Concerto
This really helped the children to recognize the music.
(I'm waiting for Netflix to deliver
Jacqueline DuPre A Portrait.)
The Cello Concerto is an incredibly beautiful piece of music which all the commentators refer to as melancholy. The work may begin poignantly but I believe it ends triumphantly. (A Catholic image comes to my mind when I listen to the work. Would you like to discuss your impression of the music? or how your children responded?)

Helen, I'm absolutely thrilled. The Elgar cello concerto is one of my favorite pieces of music EVER. Scott gave me the Jaqueline DuPre CD one year and I used to play it to death.
I will most delightedly join you in this study! I had no idea Elgar was Catholic. Thank you for the links!

Did I mention that Salut d'Amour was Elgar's first work which received recognition?
I believe he wrote the work for his wife.
Since England at the time was not known for composers (if I remember correctly, Purcell was the last of the great English composers) when the publisher issued the work and left out the very English name of Edward, simply referring to the composer as
E. Elgar,
Salut d'amour began to sell!

Alicia Weilerstein will be playing the Elgar Cello Concerto on the 11th and 13th of Jan. with the NY Philharmonic. Tonight at 7 pm she will be at Barnes & Noble at Lincoln Center, and will answer questions. I know it's late notice, but if anyone is in the area, it might be fun!

Oh, also, the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra will be performing the Elgar Cello Concerto on Feb 24th at 8pm. This is a free concert! The soloist is Philo Lee, a wonderful young cellist (and nice guy!). Because all violin students are required to take viola for one concert session, Libby will be playing viola  in the orchestra. There will be two other pieces performed, one is a lovely student composition, "La, ou la mer rencontre le ciel," and the other is Haydn Symphony No. 104 in D Major.

Don't forget to listen to Elgar's Enigma Variations - especially number 9. Elgar explained that this variation was dedicated to his friend Jaegar. One Summer evening, while the two friends were walking, Jaegar spoke eloquently about the slow movements of Beethoven. Elgar tried to capture this idea in music.
In February, I hope to propose a study of Beethoven's "slow movements" and have the children wonder which of Beethoven's slow movements (adagios - I just learned that!)inspired number 9.

Helen,
We watched part of the Jacqueline Dupre DVD from Netflix. I loved it. It was long so we had to stop because the kids were getting restless. The Cello concerto was beautiful. We are going to watch the second part this week. Thanks for suggesting this.

Natalia, I had to go back in this thread to make sure you were not watching the R rated film Hillary and Jackie with the kids! It gets quite inappropriate for youngsters...  . In fact, I had to fast forward it for myself through many parts. The film on the concerto is much nicer.
Hey, to top off this study, Libby is conducting the Elgar Cello concerto in conducting class on Saturday...too bad it's not an open class as I'd love to see that.  Someday...
