I thought for the month of June, I would suggest an American composer in honor of Flag Day (June 14th) and to be ready for the Fourth of July.
Aaron Copeland (1900-1990)
Copeland works into his compositions many of the American folk songs.
Wee Sing America
This CD is one of our favorites and I think it is a great introduction to Copland.
On Wee Sing America,
listen for
“good bye ole paint, I’m leaving Cheyenne.”
Then play Copland’s
Billy the Kid
(Rodeo[/] also sounds a bit like a folk tune during track 11 on my CD - scroll down for the link to the Bernstein link.)
If you can (and this is hard, I blurted it out when I heard it for the first time!), try not to point out the tune of Good bye Ole Paint and see if the children catch it themselves.

I recently read that Copland also composed a work entitled
Lincoln Portrait
I’m going to try to locate it.
(I get these titles confused. I hope I wrote this correctly. I think I'll play some Copeland music this afternoon.)

This will be great, Helen. LOve patriotic music around Flag Day. We did a big Flag Day study last year and will probably review some this year - the music will fit right in.

I just had to update my original post. I misspelled the name of the June composer!
Aaron Copland is the proper spelling. (It's pronounced Copeland)
I noticed this while watching Bernstein's Youong People Concerts #2
What is American Music?
The program ends with Aaron Copland conducting part of his Third Symphony.

My daughter's band performed a version of Appalachian Spring last year and it a lovely piece.
I really like Copland. Thanks for the links!

Well, I certainly botched this month's composer study!
As we're listening to the Copland CD, I just realized that the Goodbye Ole Paint folk tune is found in
Rodeo.

Our local Classical radio station produces short shows for children called "Classics For Kids." You can listen to the archived shows at the website. Here are some on Aaron Copland:
