I like to throw in a frozen banana, tablespoon or 2 of peanut butter, cup of ice and 1/2 cup or so of milk. Sometimes I also add a squirt of chocolate syrup.

I also like the very simple orange juice, banana, ice and vanilla yogurt. Maybe a few strawberries if we have them frozen. I'll add a scoop of protein powder as well when I remember.

I don't really measure when I make smoothies -- I just kinda judge it by eye -- adding more liquid if necessary, for instance.

2 of my faves:

low-fat butter pecan ice cream (small scoop) or soy vanilla "ice cream"
milk or soy milk
honey to taste
1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
1 tablespoon vanilla protein powder (optional) (soy or whey)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
ice



non- or low-fat chocolate ice cream (non-dairy if necessary)
squeeze of chocolate syrup
1 tablespoon cocoa powder dissolved in 3 tablespoons hot water
chocolate milk or soymilk
frozen raspberries
banana (optional)
protein powder (optional)

These are very rough quantities--I never measure:

1/2 c.yogurt
1/2 c. coconut milk
frozen banana
1/2 c. frozen mango
lime juice
2 raw eggs

This is a pretty big smoothie, I'd give some to one of my kids, usually. Also I wouldn't use the raw egg unless you are getting quality eggs from a farmer you trust.

This is my morning smoothie. I call it "Sunshine Smoothie":

The juice of four carrots
The juice of two small apples
A generous handful of frozen peaches
A generous handful of frozen pineapple
one or two whole peeled oranges
TBSP coconut oil
TBSP flax seed

(an egg is optional--if I'm in a hurry and not going to cook myself and egg, I'll throw it in, but I prefer the smoothie without it)

Makes two huge smoothies. It's a "5-a-day" smoothie. For Rachel Coleman fans, we sing it:
"It's a veggie-fruit-fruit-fruit-fruit day. A carrot, apple, peach, orange, pineapple day."

About sneaking spinach in: replace one of the orange fruits with dark berries and then throw in a handful of raw spinach. Spinach turns it dark so you need blueberries or something in there or the kiddoes will suspect. I can also successfully sneak spinach into smoothies with chocolate. They don't taste it. If you get caught though, all bets are off. Do it when they can't see and be sure to put the spinach bag away before you serve. Ask me how I know:-)

Frozen bananas go a long way for consistency.

Milk
1/2 a frozen banana
2 TBSP of peanut butter

(optional: egg, a squirt of chocolate and a handful of spinach)

With veggies, I often start with hot homemade broth and then throw in whatever is handy: carrots, spinach, cabbage. Be careful with peppers; they sort of overshadow everything else.

Patrick is my expert at making fruit ices. I don't know the quantity and mine are softer than his. When he gets up, I'll come back and post our favorite cherry-orange ice.

I like to experiment with Goya Fruit Pulps. So many varieties! Right now we have Pitahaya or Dragon Fruit and it was something like 99cents vs. $5.99 for one fresh piece from the produce section. The only thing listed on the bag is pulp of pitahaya and you could definitely toss some spinach in this as it is an intense reddish purple color. We'll see how it tastes in a little while, Dragon Fruit Smoothie is a new one for us.

My K.I.S.S. Smoothie

One bag of pulp
One container yogurt
Splash of juice

Give the Dragon Fruit Smoothie a try, it was spectacular! I could have had another one immediately, so yummy.

This particular recipe was:

1 bag Dragon Fruit pulp
1 small container vanilla yogurt
Peach-Orange-Mango juice.

Dd sprinkled whole blackberries over the top with a bit of whipped cream. Really delicious!

Fruit icees:

Two big juicy oranges and two cups of ice: blend until the ice is superfine. It will hold its shape. You can switch out half a cup of ice for half a cup of frozen cherries. Yum!

Here is a link to an article on coconut oil from the Weston A. Price foundation. Coconut oil is hard to find "on the cheap." Here is an old thread on the topic. I get a decent price on Nutiva coconut oil from our co-op. The gallon-size goes on sale every few months and we get a bucket.

We have a smoothie every morning here too.

Mine's basically my breakfast:
Usually a big handful frozen strawberries or blueberries
1 peeled orange
1 banana
2-3 green kale leaves
Then I add all my "other" stuff.. green powder etc.

I add water to mine for the liquid for the kids I add milk. They get theirs with breakfast.

I'm so glad I got a vita-mix for Christmas. We've used it everyday since.

The orange-cherry ice sounds yum! We have frozen cherries in the freezer. I'm going to have to give that a try.

Well this is just super fun. We are "smoothing" up a storm over here
I made the dc a smoothie and threw in 2 handfuls of fresh spinach, they loved it, asked for another one. I am throwing in carrots as well. What other veggies lend themselves to smoothies? I was going to make an avacoda one, perhaps asparagus????

I went looking for the Goya fruit pulp, to no avail    I think I need to go to Pittsburgh or a health store.   Where are you all finding coconut water? I have looked everywhere, no one seems to have heard of it

I'm using coconut milk but if you want water it is available at most health food stores these days. It's a trendy gatorade substitute.

Coconut Water and Coconut Milk are different. The first is the liquid sloshing around inside the coconut while the second is squeezed from the white flesh of the coconut.

And then there's Cream of Coconut which is even richer than Coconut Milk and you all are using Coconut Oil which is the same as Coconut Butter, right? I think that is the Coconut Milk with the watery part of the liquid removed either by drying the flesh first, or by boiling it down later like maple syrup.

So Spinach Pina Coladas are the way to start the day off, huh?
