He was homeschooled!
(I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this...).

And what's more, he was so upfront about his faith in Christ, saying that God gave him the ability to play football, and He can also take it away at any time...his priorities are God, family, school and then football. His coaches and peers could not say enough positive things about his character and humility.
In the short bio, his mom said that he was their 5th child, and they were living in the Philipines when she became pregnant. She contracted an amoeba, and was very, very sick. Her Dr. counseled her to abort for her own health. They refused of course, nearly lost the baby several times, but finally he was born healthy. I thought it was a beautiful testimony of God's sovereignty.

My boys think he is awesome. They were so excited when he received the Heisman. What a good role model.

I sure wish that every state would allow homeschooled youth to participate in high school sports. Here in Va, it's prohibited by the Virginia High School League. The Virginia Home Educators Association has been lobbying to have the rule changed. It's very slow going, but I do hope that the notoriety of Tim Tebow and especially of the provisions that allowed him to play will light a fire. I wonder if we shouldn't follow Alabama's example and go to the state legislature. Alabama has the Tim Tebow Bill
This young man has proven that there are exceptional athletes outside the school system. So, he represents the very best of the best athletically. He did achieve athletic greatness without compromising his Christian identity. And then,he also represents homeschoolers so well when he gives interviews like the one re-playing almost constantly on ESPN recently. He credits God and gives Him all the glory and then he thanks his mom for choosing life--his life--when doctors were urging an abortion. Having men like this succeed in the national sports arena is a win-win proposition. On a personal note, he's added much fodder to my mother's plea for us to relocate near her. Tim Tebow played high school ball in her neighborhood.

I too wish that every state would allow homeschool students to participate in high school sports. I have some very sports minded boys(and a dd who loves volleyball and tennis), and right now they can play on rec league teams, but as they get older, the choices will be fewer and far between.

Thanks, Maria for posting....my husband was quite impressed that I knew something about the sports world that he didn't. He was thrilled to hear he was HS!

We were so thrilled about this. My husband had been hoping he might win since he has heard so many good things about this young man's faith and lifestyle.
California's one of those states where you aren't eligible to play varsity sports unless you are attending a high school. It means some very tricky decisions for my 14 year old athlete, whose game is football.
But it's really a boost to see you can make it even into the high athletic levels without having to go to a school.

I live here in Florida and the kids only participate in public school sports if you choose to enroll them with the county as home schoolers. When you go this route you must provide the county with a standardized test score (ie Iowa or Cat5) or have their portfolios reviewed by a Florida Certified teacher at the end of each school year to be filed with the county school administration - they have a home school division. The portfolios are a daily log and examples of their writing etc. I enroll the kids in Kolbe Academy and choose the Daily Course Plans so my portfolios are a breeze for me.
I like this option though because it does allow my boys to play sports in the public schools. Some home schoolers do not like to have the state involved in their home schooling though so it is a trade off.
I just thought you would like to know it is not automatic that home schoolers are allowed to participate in public school sports in Florida
This is great story though and I think it is a great testament.

I want to say thanks, too. I sent along the info to my husband, who was then inspired to get in touch with our district superintendant. Apparently in our area (SW Ohio), some districts are open to allowing home educated students to play on high school teams, though I don't know the stipulations. The current super for our district is from one such district and told my husband that "it is being considered" (since we just elected new board members). At least it's a little more hopeful than the "absolutely NOT" response he got earlier in the year when dialoging with school officials.
And, yeah, we're kinding of nutty since we're pursuing this while our son is only in 6th grade! He currently plays on a highly competitive travel baseball team, which will likely provide him with the visibility and contacts he needs for college recruiting. However, he also plays basketball and football, currently either rec or through the local CYO league. It would be nice to have an option for these sports once he reaches high school age.
DS thought it was very cool that Tebow was home educated.
