On the Catholic Montessori playschool eloop someone shared that in Germany they make Schultuete (also known as sugar bags) for the children on their first day of school.

We're starting our more structured *back-to-school* day this Wednesday. Today I bought poster boards and wrapping paper and I'm planning to make some of these and put the dc's school supplies inside (for the younger ones anyway).

Thought I'd share the idea with you and see if anyone knows how to correctly pronounce Schultuete.

Hi Cay,
I don't know how to pronnounce Schultuete but dh might. I'll ask him.

You can buy some small ones from
Magic Cabin. They do look like they would be easy to make.

Blessings,
Louise

Schultuete:

Shool-toy-tuh with the accent on the "shool".

They featured these in the recent Family Fun Magazine. Not as big as the ones in Cay's link . I am thinking of making some to start off our school year with some fun.

marychris and everyone,
They are ever so easy to make. I made 3 last night and they are so neat! I have them hidden in my closet.

Buy a regular poster (our store had them 5 @ $1.00 for the school year) and I cut off a 10 1/2" rectangular piece leaving a square piece of poster that I simply rolled up into the cone and tape it secure. Then I laid it on a section of wrapping paper, folded it over the whole cone and taped it.

They look very festive! And they're plenty big for the play-doh and new calculator and stickers and colors and notepads, etc. that will go inside.

This is one thing that has me excited about tomorrow morning! I can't wait for the kids to walk into the kitchen and see their goodies on the table!

I've been very humdrum about starting school. With looking at everything as a learning adventure it's hard to get excited about *table time*. Seems we just ended last year and are having to start up again.

I'll take some pics tonight after I set up the table. I'll have to wait till the dc go to sleep. It's kind of like Easter/Christmas eve.

Thank you, Libby.
I believe the dc and I were making hash of it in our attempt.
Now it rolls off our tongue very well and is actually fun to say.

Cay,

I forgot about this! My German friend really goes all-out for this each year. Her children have a beautiful new outfit to wear, and an enormous schultuete. Sabrina's very first one, several years ago, was as tall as she was!

I would like to mention an alternative pronunciation:

shool-toot-tuh (and the "toot" should really be done as "teet" pronounced with the lips in an "O" shape)

This is because the "ue" you see is really the u-umlaut sound (ü). American keyboards don't have this character, so we usually substitute "ue" for it.

The word means, literally, school tote or school bag, in the sense of a smallish bag to carry items inside. German is full of incredibly creative compound words.

Thanks for reminding me of this darling tradition!

Very cute! If I can remember, we may do this for my two little ones next year, as they'll be closer to schooling age and would enjoy the treat.

Last year we put in all our school supplies and some Trader Joe goodies in the Schultuete I had made - we all went to early mass and they opened them with breakfast.

Bumping this thread up for this year.

I'm currently looking at some traditional German recipes to round out our first day of school:

The raspberry one catches my eye.

Ever since I read about this in 2005 we've been starting our year with them. The kids love them! A few times, I've given them bags instead of the cones and they don't seem to mind.
Potato pancakes come to mind as a German dish. My kids love them with applesauce. But I haven't checked the link yet, so maybe these were already mentioned.
